when do you use a flanger?

Post by Grappadura » Wed Apr 01, 2009 1:02 pm

I always seem to choose either chorus or phaser over flanger. For what standard situations would you use the flanger?

They are very simmilar.

To me, when i started playing the guitar in the 80's; a flanger was an fx peddle used by bands like the banshees and the cure to give a 'wavey' sound.

I was always under the impression that a chorus was basicaly a flanger with a tighter range?

Back then, being the economic type of cat, I bought a flanger to get more depth for my dollar!

I would like to know what the true definition was though...

Yes, they are all quite similar, in the end its always a phasing effect I believe. I also associate flange with guitars.

I started to explain this, but by the time I got to explaining allpass response curves I thought better of it.
here's some links instead

short version - despite what some people say - a phaser is not the same as a flanger.
phasers delay frequencies differently depending on wavelength, while flangers delay all frequencies equally.

that's about as short and simple as I can put it.

I use flanger all the time. Literally, it's always on the output of my soundcard. I ripped the effects section from a Pioneer DJM500 mixer, and have it hooked up in a special box I can run audio through. On top is a single button labelled "awesome".

Yes, I use it all the time.

Flanging can also work pretty well on hihat patterns.
Also as a DJ style effect to give an entire song a psychedelic vibe.(Lenny Kravitz "Are you gonna go my way")Also check out Jimi Hendrix.
flanger on drum rolls leading back into a track can also be effective.
I think Bono also milked the flanger for vocals on most of Actung Baby.
You'll find it on some DJ mixers and CDJ's that feature some fx (the Pioneer DJM series comes to mind and the CDJ100 which I think
calls it "Jet"
...and it's mr sakitumi (too late to change profile name)...damn

I've always loved the sound of big huge drums flanged out, or swirling guitars set to a low rate. it's easy to over use it though.

When you asked the question the guitar in Van Halen's "Unchained" comes to mind. I'm a guitarist and in practice I find the flanger a bit gimmicky, but it works for certain effects. Here's a link where you can hear the effect I'm thinking of on guitar.

flanger is used best over an entire mix, the pioneer DJM flanger would be the best example of this. it makes a normal dj mix pretty much amazing.
