I had the educational version of Live 7, which I upgraded to Suite 7 at the end of last month. According to the Live 8 Release FAQ that was posted on the site (which has now been taken down, but I saved a copy from Google's cache as proof), I should be getting a free downloadable upgrade to Suite 8, even though I own the educational version.
Are you sure about that? When I checked the upgrade page about a month ago it said the upgrade-to-suite-now-and-get-Live-8-for-free option did not apply to me as an educational customer.

I'm certain. I took a snapshot of the page from Google's cache yesterday. When I bought Suite on March 23, the FAQ said that the educational upgrade was free. Here's a screen capture of that FAQ (emphasis is mine):

Well, never mind. My personal upgrade price just changed to $0 USD :) Thank you, Ableton!

Whatever I'm using Live commercially anyways. I'm not getting any younger by waiting around for an edu discount. I'm biting the bullet and getting the upgrade today.

Probably not getting the suite though. Been using the basic version from the start and it's all i've needed. Moving on.

+1 for edu-upgrade-prices .... i´m still hoping they forgot to update that info but ....
i really love this software and told anyone how great a software i´m using and that it´s so affordalbe for students and teachers .... HAHAHA! NOT ANYMORE! great job abes!!!!
live8 was the last time i participated in beta-testing ... after almost two months working with the new version i need the new features and so i probably have to upgrade sooner or later ... and it´s not that live8 isn´t worth the money but it´s still a really really disappointing decision to drop the educational-upgrade-prices ...

btw, i´m studying education ... so that should be worth a hardship-discount ...

You peeps are all a bunch of whining, moaning, whingers and need to get a back bone. I am a music teacher, I teach in a school, I make less than a school teacher, I pay a mortgage, pay for three kids, and blah blah, the list goes on. Ableton won't give me a discount because I don't have an ID card from a teachers union or what ever official organization gives those things out, yet I provide the most musical tuition for a school of 800 students. Oh to be a physical ed student/teacher and at least qualify for something. Don't give me this Bull.Shit I'm a student and absolutely need the student upgrade path. I'm stuck on 6LE. The LE version is as far as I go because I can't get a Edu discount period. So I just get on with what I've got. Its the same reason I stick with my 1991 Honda Inspire sedan rather than get the Toyota Previa Van which I absolutely need. I could use Live Session View work flow nicely not only in my teaching, but have an opportunity to influence the school budget to adopt at least the LE version of Live. However when I wake up from day dreaming and face the facts, I'm locked out. So I just find another way with a different program and vote with my wallet, and persuade others to do the same, not out of spite, but out of access and availability. Ableton are not 'All things to all People.' Figure out if your on the inside, if not, STFU and go somewhere else.

Hello Kristoffer,

Thank you for your feedback.

Sorry, but as of Live 8, we are no longer able to offer educational discounts on upgrades or instruments.

We hope that the new features and improvements in Live 8/Suite 8 are attractive enough to justify the upgrade price.

Honestly, I have only touched it twice.
However, Sibelius gave me such an incredible upgrade price from G7 to the full Edu version that I spent my Live 8 budget there. It was a no brainer.
In terms of recording, Garage Band is doing it for me at the moment, also Acid express. What ever makes the money really.
I am hanging around to see if a Live 8LE arrives. I am working on a homemade foot controller to trigger bits and pieces in session view as a way to provide levels of accompaniment for my guitar students. I'll work around the 8x8 grid.

I was just about to upgrade to Live 8 until I found out about this shenanigan on this thread. Well, that's not happening any more.

gjm, I like you and sympathize with your plight but your post sounds pretty bitter because for whatever retarded reason, you can't get the edu discount (so ABleton suck on that point too, if your job description is accurate).

HOwever, the fact remains that scrapping the upgrade discount seems like a bad decision in these rough economic times. There's already evidence of some people who would have upgraded who haven't and for sure, this will just lead more people to running cracks. They won't settle for Live LE because of integrity issues. because unlike you, most people have no integrity.

It's very sad that I can upgrade Cubase for 30 dollars less and that's TWO generations behind - this would not have been the case with the edu discount. I have bought Live 6, upgraded to L7 Suite download, bought numerous items from the ABleton store, hats, laptop bags, tshirts, etc and beta tested Live 7 and 8. I'm not alone, many others on edu have done this stuff too. Ableton don't owe me a dime, and I can walk away, but Ableton have always (in the past) seemed to care about their customers and core loyal users, so I don't view this as whining. Live Suite is considerably more expensive than Logic, Sonar, Cubase, Protools LE, DP and Samplitude now, because the competitors have slashed prices, while Ableton have increased theirs. It makes no sense - volume sales - ever heard of it !!

Apologies, I did not mean to sound bitter. I'm simply not. Ableton told me 6 or so months ago that I could not qualify for and Edu discount because of the technicality I mentioned. Schools works differently here I guess than other countries, and hence the Edu 'Model' their discounting is based on does not provide a space for me. Thats fine, I'll just find another way to get the job done. I don't think Ableton suck. I think that they simply suffer from the limitations of being impersonal. The local Sibelius rep viewed my website, and after a couple of phone calls was happy to see that I was genuine in my profession and gave me the Edu deal for the full blown version. Saved me $900. No brainer really. So I spent my money. Point is, I have had 6 months to get over the disappointment of Ableton's policies. But in saying that, the Abe's have set rules to run their business, and so... end of story. I chose perhaps an impolite way to say, 'just get over it, and get on with it.' I have.

I agree with you that scrapping a discount pathway for people who were building their musical experience around it is very disappointing. Gutting really. And they WILL seek out the cracks. I got my oldest boy into Acid express, with his two best mates. They are all 14 yrs old. Within 2 weeks the other two had cracks of Acid Pro and DL'd over 2 gig of samples.

I'd be amazed if Ableton have simply picked these numbers out of a hat. More likely they have done market research, and have retained professional help to set pricing based on what they offer the market. They are not a charity, nor primarily philanthropic. They have retirement funds to contribute to and lifestyles to uphold. Its business. Unfortunately, I, as well as many others will only contribute in a minimal way, or not at all. In fact, with the exchange rate, I could upgrade Logic Express to studio for the same/less than just the basic version of Live 8. Like you say, there is value for money on offer elsewhere.
