Just built this for a friend, it smokes my April 2011 Macbook Pro 17" by 8%, for exactly half the price. Stunned. Going to have to build myself one.
Im about to do the same build. Can i ask why motherboard you used? - onboard video? ty
Here's the other parts i used:

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131703

Graphics board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102873 (good one because with 10.6.8 the drivers for it are included, so no hacking involved to get the card running)

Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145345

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115070 (unlocked so it overclocks easily)

Power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817171037

DVD writer/reader that works with hackintosh: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827118039

Used andyboot cd and his patch for the Asus motherboard that makes network, bluetooth, and sound work. send me a PM and I can send you an easy guide on how I installed and got it all running etc. It's a pretty easy set up to use, so a really easy build.
very tempting! this system runs stable, also in stress tests? I've buiklt a hackintosh several years ago which was a pita...
curious!

Yeah, ran prime95 on it for hours, and it runs solid at 4.4ghz with a stock cooler, although the case is a good one and has additional cooling, with a beefed up CPU cooller the CPU could probably easily make it to 4.8ghz.

Strange, you should get two times better than that....i think something like 35% is perfectly doable on this kind of machine..So, maybe something wrong with CPU Speed stepping..??
You said that you run snow leopard ? in theory it's not possible to install Snow leopard on this machine....
so ??
i'm really curious about the performance of the new macbook air, so, if anybody else got something to say about it ??
Thanks :-)
I get the following result on my 2011 macbook air 13":
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter, 34%

Bear in mind the first test was done before live was patched to work better on Lion. That could make up the computing differences. Would like to see a few others results though for comparison.

I tested again and now I get 37% on the cpu meter, with some other apps open as well. My geekbench score is 5447 in 32-bit mode, I assume the performance in live should correlate somehow with the geekbench score. But as live is multithreaded and geekbench do singlethreaded tests as well it will vary to some extent.

My desktop (2.4 GHz quad) get 25% in the live performance test, and 5201 in geekbench. Here, 4x2.4 GHz offers better multithreading than 4x1.7GHz in the MBA.

The thing with sandy bridge is that the cpu have thermal management to ensure max cpu power for different workloads (turbo boost for single threading etc.), given the max TDP allowed. But if it's getting too hot it will lower the cpu frequency. If the 1.8 GHz i7 get too hot it may underperform, but half the performance is not acceptable. If I remember correctly my old macbook got about 70% in the live performance test.

cheers

Note: I cannot get it to 512 samples, it will only allow 256. Need to play with it more. I feel my old sound interface is a weak link. I'll bet I can get it to +/-10% with a CPU OC and a modern sound interface. This machine which I built a week ago is silly fast.:)

Ran this again today. Changes since my original post are 32GB of Corsair 1600mhz RAM + CPU OC to 4.5Ghz and the result is 8% CPU load. I do feel there's maybe 1% or so left but I'm not sure why I'd even tweak it at this point. I did manage to get the soundcard to 512 samples this time via the card's CP.

So, as follows (changes are in BOLD):

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter %: 8%
2) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model? Custom Built Sandy Bridge Tower, Sabretooth P67 Rev 3 mobo
3) Operating System? Win 7 64bit
4) Ableton Live version? 8.2.2
