Oh please bring back the old warping functionality.

Post by Petteri Karjalainen » Sun Apr 05, 2009 10:51 am

I am getting nose bleeds with this new warp functionality in Live 8. While I can see it's good points, the old way of warping is far more familiar and makes sense.. Changing fundamental functionality that people have been using for years is difficult, but why not haven an option for "old fashioned" warping or something?

I was wondering how this would impact on all of us.

This a huge step backwards for me.

I mostly use ableton for DJing, and never had a problem before - I could warp tracks quickly on the fly. Now it seems more complicated, and hence slower, to fiddle about with the transients. And what's worse is that to make room on the screen they've taken away the mins/secs grid at the bottom of the waveform, and its less easy to see the bar numbers where your warp markers are. Bah.

I think it's much better, but then I use warping mostly for creative purposes (stretching things to create new rhythms). Being able to warp to triplets is fantastic.

Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

The new warping engine is a godsend for me!
It is now what I always wanted it to be.

I never DJ with Live tho, just produce and do live sets with it, so perhaps I am not affected by these problems..

guys, it takes some getting used to. But you gotta admit there are benefits to be found, too, right?
Transient detection combined with warping makes things really easy for me - sure, the old version was good too, but once the learning curve is over on this new one you'll find it very good.

If you look at the Live 7 clip below (from the ableton website) you'll see how each of the warp markers that are placed in Live 7 clearly show the bar number and position. When playing songs with breaks in unusual palces (e.g. bar 57) it is useful to be able to easily count how far away you are for looping other bits over the top.

In Live 8 you can't see this - only a yellow box somewhere along the overall warpline.

IMHO the new interface gives me a lot less info visually - warp markers (top) and timeline (bottom).

yes please .... whilst I am very happy with the sound, the old warping interface just felt way more comfortable ... a choice in the preferences would be great

I guess there's no pleasing some people!

How many of you have actually put some time (as much time as you had put into the 'old' way of working) into the new warping system?

It took me a while to get used to it, but methinks the new warp mode is quite a bit better. Makes much more sense to move stuff along the timeline instead of moving the timeline.

Mind you, I'm not a DJ, I usually only warp to edit four or eight bar loops.

There may well be circumstances where the old way is better, even when you're used to the new way. But give it a few hours. You may grow to like it, like most beta testers did, eventually (judging from the discussions at the beta forum).

Given that I've been using Live (or Remix as it was) for over 5 years are you really saying that I should wait another 5 before being in a position to comment?!

I'm sure I will get used to the new way of working (and come to enjoy moving the transients), but no amount of time will make the missing information (warp bar numbers and timeline) reappear. FFS.

I prefer the new warping over the old warping method hands down. It makes much more sense to me to warp a clip based on the timeline than the other way around.

I massively prefer the new way of doing it.
once you've used it for a while the old method seems like some kind of insanity.

Hopefully the programmer responsible for warping #ifdef'd the old code out :-)

I could see them making the user-interface portion an option - I don't mind the new way though. Takes some getting used to yes but that's to be expected.
