good solvent to erase gear (apc40) graphics?

Post by rpsx » Wed Apr 15, 2009 7:21 am

in dreaming of my future apc40, i couldn't help but notice that, for my own personal taste, the graphics are a bit much. maybe very useful in one's first 20 minutes with the machine, but a bit too much for looking at it for the 100,000 more minutes i will spend with it thereafter.

anyone know of a solvent that will take off silk-screening, but leave the painted metal pristine??

DCM is pretty powerful stuff and has a super low boiling point so it evaporates rather quickly. also no explosive danger

(thats dichloromethane, or methylene chloride as it used to be called)

dunno if I'd want to get it anywhere near an expensive piece of gear like that but hey, its your stuff

 what graphics? In such cases, I always recommend self-adhesive vinyl -> http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=100034 - the 1970s were cool... 8)

It might work for the APC40, just don't blame me if it doesn't.

when i repainted my mpd24....i used acetone and the abrasive part of an athletic sock. Then slowly rub it off and let the acetone evaoporate for another few minutes before doing another layer......if you over saturate you will eat through the plastic much quicker.

thanks for all the hints! will certainly try them. i noticed though, there seem to be 3 versions of front end graphics i have seen... odd akai has "older" ones... or newer? guess we will know when it is actually out! i am 99.99% sure the logos on the front got to go... at least the akai one ;-)

cheers!

use wire wool. more environmentally friendly than using a solvent ;-)

This might work. It does wonders for removing gunk, glue, and other adhesives...

stickers > using chemicals to get rid of graphics

ALSO, and seriously, you should consider this, DON'T give Akai any reason to say manufacturer defects are your fault - the reviews on the MPD series are 50/50 at best, and if you have a problem with your APC and have to send it back, you don't want to be saying to them "Oh yeah, I used harsh chemicals on it to get rid of your logo". Plus, having the logo there will help retain resale value should you decide you don't like using it, and sticker gunk is easier to get rid of than logos.

Throw a towel over it and run it remotely from your BCF2000?
