great experiment.. but I wonder if there are still too many variables to come to any conclusion.. People have different environments, monitors, headphones, etc.. Maybe some headphones are built for mp3 playback since that's the main format everyone seems to listen nowadays, and can't handle the quality stuff... ahh, don't mind me, i have no clue what i'm blabbing about. I'm just bored at work... I'll try this later when I get home.. . maybe you should also try recording samples at different sampling rates and see if anyone can actually tell the difference..

In an interesting twist, I compared a 320 mp3 version of the Ting Tings "That's Not My Name" with the Aiff from the cd and found that the mp3 was brighter and slightly more exciting sounding (much like what I found with the MGMT) - some kind of artifact of the encoding process??? Sounds almost like the distortion of heavy limiting...

also

does anyone else hear the slight distortion (sounds almost like a blown speaker cone) on the first few kickdrum beats (on the left speaker) of "Shut Up and Let Me Go?" - this seems really weird to me - how did this make it on to the final version of the album??? Maybe the is intersample distortion which is clipping the DAC...
