one of these days.....

Post by Robert Henke » Tue May 05, 2009 9:21 am

I thought I share this with you ( --> concept of split anger.... )
The topic of that mail is a performance of my Atom piece at a big festival in Canada....
--------------------------------------

Hi,

Here is a request for the sound at the xxxx festival in the xxxx Theatre:

9.2 Decibels
The xxxxx Theatre is situated under the Jean-xxxxx Theatre.
The proprietors have requested that the sound levels of the venue be
respected, as per the satisfaction of THE SOCIETY, at a volume no higher
than ninety-six (96) dbc.
All sound equipment, other than that belonging to THE SOCIETY, must be
wired through an attenuator-compressor to achieve a decibel balance to this
end.

Thanks.

xxxxx.

yeah,
we would really like to see your installation but the people attending are boring old farts that cant handle a proper loudness thats needed for the right experience of the piece.

wankers,

303

edit: oh, its BELOW another theatre... than its more like: "your installation is too loud for the paying customers above, your piece is awesome but we have to look out for the people bringin in the money". even bigger wankery!

Well, what's really annoying is the fact that this comes up long after the contract has signed etc. Really nice move. Well, I wrote them a mail back saying that this is not acceptable, but I already can see an absurd and stressful discussion coming when we set up...

I do live sound and one of the last riders I got after the usual stuff regarding mics etc.. said something like...

"XXX are loud make sure you have enough power"

Maybe you should add that to your rider as well!

The thing that gets me with such restrictions for indoor venues at least, is that little or no effort is made to keep the sound inside the venue.

We can comfortably listen to music at much louder volumes as long as the system used to reproduce the sound is of sufficient quality.

I don't think it too unreasonable for venues to spend money on proper sound insulation, thereby maximising the listeners experience and allowing some of these magnificent sound systems to show off their capabilities, especially when entry charges are premium rate.

I don't know the situation with this particular venue but it sounds like the audience is going to be able to hear themselves talk above the sound of the music.

I thought this is clear:

"sound system:
the sound system should consist of four full range speakers and two additional subs,
for example :

4 x db audio C7-TOP
2 x db audio B2-SUB "

if I specify such a PA, I assume that what i can use is what this PA offers, right????

I will add another line:

PA needs to be capable to provide an undistorted SPL of 120dB over a range of 50 Hz to 15 kHz...

It all starts becoming a lot less fun when you have to keep checking on each particular venue's restrictions.

Don't you just love red tape?

It's a genetic thing. Canadians actually explode at 97db so you can understand their concern.

Only problem with that is the audience will clearly be heard calling out "turn it up"!

And that would be the performance.

I think i'd rather hear some good music at a decent volume, I even think Robert Henke's request for spl's of 120 db is still a bit quiet.

I for one am absolutely SICK of all these fringe festivals making a dog's dinner out of the overall sound. Every area competes for volume, leading to bass bleeds everywhere - sounding muddy & boomy unless your pressed right up against a scoop on the front row, and every room sounds shit as a result...... Sound proofing or lower volumes FTW.
