Well,

to be honest, the first major software I bought was Reaktor 4 , after using various versions of cubase and many cracked plugs since I turned soft(ware) - before that I had to buy all the hardware!

I started off using a crack of Live 3, and at one point it stopped working, and so I went out and bought it. And I'm glad I did cos Ableton (among others) really deserve it.

The crack mindset is simple - if its available, why not use it?? Same as people who download and distribute illegal mp3's - morality is rarely an issue.

The strange thing about copying digital stuff is that your not depriving anyone else of it, just making a replica...

My cloning lab is working hard on a fourth version of me with a more proportionately-sized, suntannable head. Frankly, I'm perfectly happy with my greenish, fluorescent pallor.

Obviously you've never had to work for a living. Someone get this guy a Parasite of the Year award.

Okay dumbasses, here's how things work in the Real World:

The more copies of a digital product you steal, the more that honest people pay to recoup the research, development and production costs. So, yes, you are depriving others of what you are stealing.

I'm not in favor of cracked stuff, but your reasoning on economics is flawed big-time. Let's say total Direct Cost of Goods sold for Ableton for a given year is 2 million (dollars, euros, whatever).. Let's say Ableton sells 7,500 licensed units at $400 per unit in that same year which equates to 4 million (dollars, euros, whatever). That gives a contribution margin of 2 million leftover to cover overhead, operating profit, etc.

Now, it doesn't matter if 5, 1000, 75000 or 500000 software pirates get their hands on a cracked version.....the economics of the vendor remain unchanged. You could argue that it's lost revenue, but it certainly doesn't cause the honest people to pay more. The only way honest people would pay more is if the product is underpriced and the developer isn't covering expenses + profit in which case the price might go up.

if anything wouldn't a key generator be the safest way to crack software?
since using a keygenerator doesnt cripple the software at all, it just tricks it into thinking that Ableton or NI has authorized it for Full usage instead of limited Demo usage.
.
personally I think it's more to do with sub releases and bug fixes you're not getting..alot of the cracks I used to come accross in the past were usually v.01 or close when the full version was up to v.50 or something - I started buying all my software because I usually wanted to use things together 'rewire, vst etc' and alot of the time they wouldn't work and I'd find out after hours of trawling the internet that it got fixed in a later bug release which hadn't been cracked yet

I realised I had credit cards and I might as well have the set up I want so it will work.

I also thought it hypocritical that I want to make a career in the other most ripped off, pirated industry - what goes around comes around and all that.

Lol. Beautiful! Now that's always the winning solution. The icing on the cake is a nice usurious rate of 29.99% APR

It is a fucking moral issue. It does raise the price of products and you are all a bunch of whiny, selfish, ignorant, pricks who deserve the world your creating. May the muse avoid you like the lice-ridden, offensive and mentally deficient louts you are. Theft is theft, admitting wrongdoing while patting yourself on the back and saying 'what a good boy am I' dont cut it. Shame on you. What a bunch of assholes... :x

sounds like somebody needs a hug!

Duuude, you need to get away from the TFT for a bit and chill out.

Go to the beach, roll a huge spliff and drink bacardi cocktails for a bit, these be 'need a break' words you speak.

The word "moral" is a very contraversial one when applied to any of us living in the "global community" Anyone wearing a pair of Nikes or using computer parts made very cheaply in 3rd world countries (the list is endless) is just in denial about their lack of morals, that means myself also.

I know a LOT of people, and I mean MOST I've met making music using computers (including macs) that primarily use cracked software to do so. This is mainly because of poverty, as if that exists in the western world (relative poverty anyway), or because it's very, very easy to get your hands on. I'ts REALLY just one of the cardinal sins, the one called "temptation" that people fall victim to.

I think that the tide is kind of turning, people are realising the advantages of owning proper licences, and of not having an option anxiety complex because of too much software, but mainly because people are starting to become more honest with themselves and each other. This is possibly born of a flip reaction to blatent governmental dishonety or something.

My point is this, when someone owns up to having been dishonest it means that he/she has changed themselves for the better. It is a GOOD thing to hear! Caining someone for doing so is totally unjust, as is any sort of draconian ZERO TOLERANCE bollocks we seem to hear so much of.

This is a very contraversial thread about a contraversial subject, too much is kept dishonest or taboo if people can't openly discuss their experience without hardliners banging their stupid fists on the table all the time. It just shuts people up and preserves the status quo, which is what we are all trying to break isn't it?

I can't believe how angry some people get about what we all know is just REALITY!!!!!!

Why can't we discuss intelligently without some tosser going off on one and scaring people from actually being HONEST?

Sorry for the rant, second one this week, do you think I'm due a period or something? 8O

1st off I buy my software which keeps me in the loop as far as updates and support -

But with the power of the internet you have to take the good with the bad - the internet is our new economy /market - you can buy a new couch or you can by viagra - you can buy your software or you can download cracks - it's just the way it is - logically is makes more sence depending on your motives to just download something for free - seriously - free is better than a whole lot of money - however there's a price you pay...you miss out on a lot of stuff, some people don't care and some do

My buddy makes the best techno I've ever heard - he hasn't paid for one bit of software - so really...

OK, so he's a "theif" even though he's not technically stealing anything but...when his records come out and you buy them what does it matter - you bought the record and the people on the dance floor aren't sitting there going "Oh, he used a cracked version of Cubase!"

Hey, it's there...there's nothing you can do about - personally, I keep all my receipts (!)
