Good pitch shifting plug

Post by gtodd876 » Thu May 07, 2009 12:57 am

I'm looking for a good way to pitch shift my bass in ableton. (in real time an octave up) Like the pedals they have for guitarists to drop it down an octave so they can play basslines. I'd like the opposite so I can jump my bass up an octave.

i used "mad shifta" on my powerbook all the time but damn ...now it,s not working on my intel based MBP

i dedicated the shift function to the pitch-bend on my midicontroller. Had a lot of fun with it.

it's surprisingly hard to find a good simple realtime pitch shifter for the Mac...

Audiowish have Octave Shifter 2, which is free...

and there's Pitchwheel by QuikQuak too:

Otherwise, something I don't own (nor have I tried) is DISCORD V2. Supposedly there will be V3 done later this year and the best part about that is that their upgrade fees are dirt cheap!

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but if you play your basslines in midi, why not just use "Chord" and/or "Scale" (in the Midi effects section) to shift notes up an octave. Just set up Chord +12 and map the on/off button to a midi controller. To fatten up the sound more, just use the other Shift knobs to -12, +24, etc...

I know its overkill but the only place ive found good, comfortable sounding pitch shifters are in guitar plugs like amplitube, guitar rig...that kind of stuff... thats my ears, but all the other one off plugs sound grainy and digital to me...

have you tried the new pitch shifter in L8? (thought i would mention it since nobody has).

aside from that, yeah, guitar rig. . but i have yet to find one that sounds as nice and smooth as Logics.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I am using an acoustic double bass. So it is a really big fat lump of wood with strings on it:)

Mike- So does amplitude or guitar rig have real time pitch shifters that work great for pitch shifting basses up as well as shifting guitarists down? If so I will look into guitar rig.

swishniak- I know of the frequency shifter but not of a pitch shifter in L8.

I've been getting good a fairly satisfactory fake bass guitar in Live 8 by recording my Ovation acoustic then pitching the whole clip down an octave using the new Elastique Pro setting. You then just set the formant slider to remove the brightness of the strings a bit.

It should work the other way too if you want to play around with a double bass recording.

Real time shifting never really works well, I've heard some harmonizers in the past but they were pretty expensive. The new Frequency shifter is probably the best place to start but it's not going to get the formant right.

while we're on the subject, what are the good non-real time shifters (for the Mac)?

Yup, I use the whammy pedal in guitar rig for good old pitch shifting. That's if I don't feel like running a cable out to my 80's Digitech Whammy pedal for the authentic thing and running it back in. Nothing does beat the real thing, but having compared the pedal to the plug in back to back, the Guitar Rig one sounds mighty fine.
