Need help fixing defective HDD

Post by rikhyray » Sat May 09, 2009 12:39 pm

My ext 2.5 stopped moving few weeks back, board was my suspect and I was right, finally found same model on Ebay, replaced the board and it moves now. However cannot see the data, its partitions do not show up, tried Acronis Disc director rescue disc, cannot see it either. It is visible in Computer administration, disc management but asks to be initialised. I want to be sure to save the data before doing anything (the reason I went through whole procedure of finding same model to get the circuit board). My guess is that initialise might equal/include formatting so before I do anything would love to hear from someone experienced.
Thanks in advance.

sounds like you need to try some data recovery software that will scan the drive and try and locate the files that are lost on there (by the sounds of it the partitioning and directory structures may be toast)...

dunno what's good on Windows though...

Stellar Phoenix.

It saved my life when I thought all hope was lost.
Tried just about every other app on the market, but this
one was the only one that could read the partitions.

Best of luck.
