How are the Event Opals?

+1. Torn between those and Focal Twins at this point, or possibly stepping up to Barefoot mm35's....

Well I didn't have the chance to audition any of the monitors you mentioned, but probably like you read a bunch of reviews and I kinda just went off that.. I figured if I didn't like them, I'd just return them and try other monitors I was looking at. Plus I really wanted to try them in my room cuz every room is different. It's true that these have alot of bottom end and I basically got rid of my sub... without any accoustic treatment and/or ERGO, the bass is muddy as hell but that's the room, not the monitors.. I use both and the bottom is really defined and I tested them and they are accurate to 35 Hz and seems rolls off at 30 Hz.. Imaging is incredible and although I don't have alot of experience with many monitors, these by far blow away every monitor I've heard. My only trouble with them was placement as they are very sensitive. if positioned wrong, the high's seemed very exaggerated and in your face.. I've always used the triangle method with the monitors facing the listener.. With the opals, you actually have to face them slightly outward more and pointed slighltly past the shoulders. I also had to increase the distance from me in comparison to the old monitors I had, but that is my experience and maybe again it's the room. but after I did that, oh how sweet it was.. nothing has translated better and listening to your favorite tracks are really enjoyable and you can see what the engineer was trying to accomplish.. although not a downside, it really has been a slap in the face and it really showed how god awful some of my past material was.. So bad that I've even taken off the link to my music in my sig until they get fixed.. In all, I am very happy with my purchase.. Again, I am not gonna claim to be the monitor expert because I'm not so I apologize for not really having a in depth review with figures and comparisons.. I'm sure you've read the reviews and to me, they really are true. If they weren't, I would have returned these and tried other monitors I was looking at. Plus you can get them for around $2400 for a pair, and at that price, they blow everything away within that price range.. at first i was skeptical thinking the reviewers were paid by opal or something.. but just be aware that many people have complained of a slight hiss when the monitors are just on.. this was from the first batch they produced and have been fixed.. I got lucky and got the newer batch.. You can tell by looking in the back... the newer versions don't have a voltage switch.. BTW the room correction software that comes with the Opal is still under development.. but owners will get it by mid year for free (that's what i got from the email from them)

I found the 0300's to be a little light on the low end, which would mean I'd likely need the sub as well. Trying to avoid going with a sub if I can.

Because I'd rather have a set of monitors that can low low enough without needing to add one. Cost is a factor as well. 0300's plus a sub pushes my monitoring budget out pretty far.

a subwoofer in a small/medium sized room ..
would have a better physical seperation between the low end and the rest...
with adjustable volume and crossover most of the time...
just saying it'll be easier to get good/better sound-spectrum in almost any 'home-studio' scenario with the addition of a sub..

I have 8" events and a 17" sub...
I pay a huge attention to bass on my stuff...but everytime opening up the sub .. will introduce me to parts of my track I didn't know of...
I usually don't open it up cuz of the neighbors but it's good to have for when I really need to ..
plus I sometimes patch the 'evolver' through it and record basslines...nothing like moving some air..
it's a very good reference

this is especially true when you're mostly dealing with electronic/dance tracks..
where you can't really know for sure what low-end frequency domain a track is occupying without a scope...
trying to figure out which track is pushing all this volume that you're not hearing....
(when recording a saxophone or congos... you'd naturally know what frequencies to expect... )

I'd recommend a sub to anyone who can't host a huge speaker system in the studio simply because of the size

Guess we have different opinions then, as I think subs are usually a really bad idea in small to medium sized rooms. Without proper bass trapping and knowing how to set up and position the sub right, it usually just makes things worse in my experience.

The sub can help in the fatigue of your ears because you left the mids and highs only in the near field monitors

Until everyone has a sub, I don't think it's a good idea to mix with one.

Check translations? Absolutely. Keep as many speaker systems on hand as possible to do that. Heck, I've got four separate systems for that, three containing subs.

But mixing? I don't think it's wise. Unless you get a feel for it, your mixes could be lacking bottom on systems without a sub.
