Video - Apc40 - Opening the box and plugging in

Post by COSM » Tue May 26, 2009 12:17 pm

Thanks to Akai and StoreDJ, I've managed to get my grubby little hands on an APC40 before the official release date. I strolled down and collected it yesterday, went straight home, set the camera rolling and filmed my first experience with the unit.

Watch the video as I plug it in and jump right into it!

I am spending lots of time with it over the next few days, and I will show it off at the official Ableton Live 8 launch in Melbourne on Thursday night ( http://www.cosm.co.nz/launch ) ... so if you are in VIC, head on down.

Ooh, ya cheeky monkey, Mr Cosm! Going on your previous work, I can only presume that what you put out with this machine is going to be pure gold.

Nice.

Actually, could you do something crap with it? I don't want another reason to want one!

Awesome video mate - best APC-40 video I've seen and by far the best music! Great video production too - music and commentary well balanced. To be honest, I was starting to tire of the APC-40 hype, but your video has re-injected the excitement back - you should get a sales commission from Akai & Ableton :D

Thanks!

Youv'e just sold me on the idea of getting an APC.

I wasnt realy seeing what all the fuss is about, but having watched your tutorials over the last few days and then seeing the APC just take over your set like that so instantly & effortlessly, to me shows just what a great piece of kit this will be for Live.

Tom,

The video is seriously great. Please, please, please post another once you've had a chance to break it in a bit. I would love to know if it has any impact on how you arrange your megaset or on your performances in general. I'd also love to know if you do any customizations with it.

Not that you would want to slag the company that hooked you up so generously, but would you have any negative comments on the build (too-short x-fader), navigation (Too much clicking to get around your monster Live set) or any other niggly issues? Not that I want to hear any complaints, but perhaps a few "constructive criticisms" form someone that actually uses Live live? If anyone on this board has earned an opinion that should be heard by the devs, it's TOM COSM.

Thanks for the vid, btw. my gear porn fix has been met.
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

if the master encoder is set to tempo/volume (wasn't paying attention), and it has a shifted function, you might want to midi-map it to "scene scroll", save you quite so much clicking about. Or you could re-arrange your set.
Could you measure how wide the xfader is? Heard it's replaceable, want to see if my Penny & Giles might fit.
Looks very nice.

I was waiting that whole video for you to realize that you can also navigate by holding shift and clicking one of the boxes in the grid, which are assigned to groups of 8 tracks. Good vid though. Made me want one even more.

I wish I could watch this video. I've never been able to watch anything on Vimeo. I use a Verizon aircard in my laptop for Internet, and the super high quality of Vimeo's compression is too taxing on my connection. When you hit play the video stutters constantly and it's completely unwatchable. You can't even hit pause and wait for it to buffer, it will still stutter. There isn't even an option for a lower rez version of the video. Vimeo sucks liquid duck shit. Anything anyone puts on Vimeo will be ignored by a large number of viewers by default. It doesn't work on an iPhone, and it doesn't work on a computer with an non-robust connection.

I realize you're trying to drive traffic to your site, Tom, but you're also not even opening the door to a large percentage of your potential audiences.

AND I HAVE GEAR LUST AND NEEEEED TO SEE A BOX OPENED!! FFFFFUUUUUCCCCCKKKK!!!!!!!! :x  :x  :x

I´m impressed how intuitive this controller is literally right out of the box! What´s your opinion of this thing compared to the Vestax VCM600?
Are you still going to use the Vestax at the Ableton Live 8 launch in Melbourne? If you will switch to the Apc40 by then I must say that this is a pretty smart marketing move from Akai, supplying you with the Apc40 just a few days before the launch event.
