I left out the encoder LEDs to see if a device could be made with just the launch buttons.

regarding the encoder LEDs. pretty much if a user can EVER find a way to turn more than one on, you'd make sure you can power them all.

the top encoders only have one on at a time, the bottom ones seem to change modes depending on what they're mapped to. with mine right now, some of them are 'left/right', only one is on when it's centered. some are progressive where 1 is on when the value is 0 and all are on when the value is 128.

^ like a friend of mine who got drunk and disassembled his SPDs before a bike tour the next day. Unscrew the wrong screw and the whole pedal explodes across the room... which is exactly what happened.

He rode with platform pedals the next day... :D

Here is my hatchet job on the APC40-Micro

The Cue_Level Knob could also be used for volume of the Track selected,
just gotta add a LCD ring to it.

To sell a separate unit with a different layout, they'd have to manufacture a completely different line of products , which would split up the sales between the two of them and potentially hurt the bottom line if it doesn't offset the costs of production or distribution or whatever. It probably costs a lot more to sell different versions of the same unit.
sorry, but how can you speculate about the cost of manufacturing something? aren't you a biomed student? have you ever been involved in anything remotely resembling this process?

wanna know how this stuff is made? market team discusses what people want. they tell engineering what to make, engineering pushes back on the schedule and cost. a few months go by while the nerds do the geekshit (electronics and mechanicals) and VPs argue about the color of knobs and stupid shit like that. you send the design files to a Contract Manufacturer, a few weeks later boxes show up with the finished product.

the geekshit and marketing are done, all they would need is new sheet metal to house a subset of the assembly and design a new box to ship it in.

I can see a compact USB powered version coming out, lose the knobs and faders. the name though... the 40 in APC40 is the number of pads on it.
Because all that marketing, design work, squabbling and testing comes for free right?

I'm not saying it won't happen but the return on investment needs to be right. Even modification to existing products need a reasonable business case, particularly when resources are being directed away from new products
