Well most definitely the price point is not a fail. Big win on that front. Just hurtin' over the removal of the expresscard slot. Mine was getting plenty of use.

get over it. it's 2009.
people who have more than just a single firewire item (soundcards? external hard drives? anyone?) running at the same time, hence use the expresscard slot as a port expansion. A single FW800 port can only do so much. And what about people who use DSP accelerators such as the UAD solo... which was released just a couple of months ago? They're probably not too happy about that... unless they decide to splurge on the 17".

Don't care if it's 2009... ExpressCard IS relevant to many. Anyways that 17" is looking tempting at that base price. *stroking chin*

At 3.06 ghz, the top model 15' may be worth upgrading finally from my 2.16 ghz since I really like the new unibody build and wouldn't mind the 500gb hard drive. I'm hoping someone else will get it first and post their results for the performance test.

You musn't know what you are talking about...

Pro users need express card and an esata port would of been useful

Seriously Apple needs to know it's 2009

No Blueray
No Expresscard
No Esata

I can't believe they removed an express card slot from a pro machine.

Pro Video Users need this for add on cards, card readers for pro level cameras (red one, Canon, Sony, Panasonic)

Audio Users need this for some audio cards and DSP cards such as UAD2

Everyone could use it for Esata cards

Seriously Apple what were you thinking???

Many people use it especially those who use d.s.p. boxes like powercores etc.....Also it would allow you to still use your firewire 400 device. It is kind of a shame actually.

well, you don't really need it for firewire 400, but for a 'pro' machine to have such limited expansion options is really a lame shame...

I could sure use that Expresscard slot! I have a 17" now and was REALLY hoping to move down to a 15". I guess I just wait...or buy another 17"...which I don't want to do, for sure.

Expresscard.....it's so damn useful!

Bought a 15" pro three weeks ago, mainly for firewire, I would jump at that 13" inch now if I hadn't bought though.

I've gotten used of the screen size now though so I've no regrets.

Here's hoping Snow Leopard and OpenGL will allow us to use these fancy GPUs for audio processing :)

I fear that the term 'Pro' is increasingly just a marketing ploy. As was the term 'PowerBook' -clever name for a laptop that was underpowered when compared to many others at that time. But at least it had firewire 800, which is a pro feature.

By removing the express card & replacing it with a lousy SD card slot (huh??) in the current machines, Apple clearly targets it's market: consumers. Oh Apple, so sad...

Not to say I approve of the ommision of the Express card, especially on the 15", but the SD slot is better than nothing. You can use it to make back ups of your most important files. It will be easier than using an optical disc or keychain flash drives. 8GB cards are really cheap:

The price of these things has dropped so dramatically and quickly over the last 12 months, it's not hard to imagine buying a 32GB card for under $20 in the very near future. With a few of those cards you you have a pretty useful little slot on your hands.

also, they are actually very common our days with audio related products... to store presets, recordings and the like...

SD cards aren't exactly speedy devices though... and aren't the file systems you can use pretty limited?

Not going to buy another Apple product until they release something with eSATA, Blue-Ray, and Expresscard in the same machine.
MBP 1.86 GHz, 2Gb RAM, Live 6, Logic Studio, Reason 4, Komplete 5, Melodyne, BFD, IK Studio Bundle etc etc
