Looking to expand effects, any suggestions?

Post by bodhi71 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 7:51 pm

Thinking about Camel Space, Alchemy, Camel Phat, Have Ohmicide, any ideas?
What are some VST, AU effects that you couldn't live without?

This may be unpopular around here cause we all suffer from gearlust but,

I only use basic effects: (stock in LIVE and DP), verb and delay. Occasionally some flange and chorus and pre-amp from DP.

I concentrate on song-writing, quality of the sounds / instruments and production.

Fancy effects are really not necessary to write great tunes.

Now, I do have a UAD card for it's compressors. I also have WAVES Musician's Bundle, but that's for it's compressors and L3 for mastering. Yes, I master all my own stuff.

+1 for above comment tbh. I am on the hunt for a decent new reverb plugin, because my love for the Live reverb is fading quickly (I really cant get a decent studio/room reverb sound how i want it at all) so looking for something a bit more comprehensive sounding. Otherwise I tend to use just Abletons Native effects, except for a few free plugins such as the Audio Damage Rough Rider (when i want really extreme compression) or the CamelCrusher for more dirt. I dont find the need for anything else, or maybe thats what im telling myself as I cant afford sack all haha

If you already have ohmicide, I wouldn´t go for camel phat, they are too close together in what they do. Get the TAL flanger, its free and its great, one of my favorite plugins at the moment. Of those you mention I might go for alchemy.

i use Camel Space, Camel Phat, and even Camel Crusher all the time. dblue Glitch is good for effects and it's free. i've been looking into Effectrix. Reaktor has some good effects ensembles. there are some great freebies out there. check sites like KVR Audio for lists and you can find some good Live Pack effect racks from producers like Pure Magnetik. as far as stuff i can't live without... the Camel Audio stuff, Waves Platinum, and Live's native stuff. and if i could stop buying other gear, i'd pick up the SilverLine bundle from D16 Group. check into developers like sugar bytes and audio damage for interesting effects. also u-he's uhbiks have had much praise. what kind of effects are you looking for? the normal stuff or the off-the-wall crazy tweaker effects?

I guess I'm looking for off the wall, great sounding, usable effects that aren't already covered in Live.
I really enjoy writing soundscape/ambient types of music. So anything that might lend a bit of magic to this type of genre.
Recently switch to Mac, and find that a lot of the VSTs I used aren't cross-platformed.
I knew it going into it, no big deal. The only thing I really miss is my Zeta synth.

Alchemy seems pretty cool, but I don't really need another synth, and it seems a bit pricy for an effect...
Gear Lust? maybe :|

Fabfilter Timeless 2. It's amazing. Modulation for days. Their Volcano 2 is great also. Try the demos. Live reverb is awful, strangely i feel like auto filter is mediocre but Sampler's filter works nicely. Everything else rules. Check freeware sites like vstcafe. There's a lot of cool freeware around. I like TAL, esp. their USE eq. Audio Damage have a cool free tremolo, 3 lfo's basically. Try using Sampler to modulate and filter things for ambient work. Mainly just tweaking/ experimentation should get good results with Live's stuff, there's a lot there.

First of all, alchemy is a synthesizer, not an effect

Second, here are my go-to effects (not mastering related):
*The u-he Uhbik plugins (great plugins all together at a great price. a must)
*redline reverb
*Ohm Force ohmboyz
*Ohm Force mobilohm
*Fabfilter Timeless 2
*Fabfilter Volcano 2
*U-he Massive Feedback Machine 2 (MFM2)
*Camel Space is nice

Other than that, its mostly clever routing and automation

My favorite effects plug-ins:

Sugar Bytes Artillery
Sugar Bytes Effectrix
Reaktor FX (too many to mention but especially the reverbs)
Kore 2 FX (excellent weird presets using absynth, guitar rig, reaktor etc.)
Zebrify
ohmicide

I think it's worth having a few different reverbs (I got Aether, Rayspace and Reaktor verbs) and a few overdrives as well (I've got ohmicide, predatohm, trash, vogue and others).
Professional Shark Jumper.
