Anyone using Intel i7?

Post by ethios4 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 4:25 pm

I've got enough money saved now to finally buy a new computer! I'm thinking I'll get a custom build PC with a quad-core processor, at least 4 GB RAM, a couple of 500 GB 7200's, etc. Intel's new i7 processors look pretty sweet. Anyone here using them or have any stories to tell?

I just got a new pc built a couple of weeks ago with an i7 920 overclocked to the same speed as the top of the range chip - 3.8GHz. The company who built the system overclocked it for me.
It's shockingly fast and incredibly stable.

A friend of mine has just built a system with an i7 2.66 GHz processor.
Didn't seem to pay too much. In Australia, you can pick em up for close to $400 AUD.
I think that's very reasonable.

He also bought a solid state hard drive. Sooo quiet.

He was running an older 2.6 ish core duo, and was hitting around 70% with clicks n pops.
On new system, same project runs around 9% and spikes into double figs every now and then.

He is damn happy.

When the Solid State Hard Drives double in capacity and half in price, I will be picking some up for sure,
along with my i7 2.93 processor, Windows 7 and a shit load of RAM.

The future is here!

As my PC died, I've just built a new PC, but as I'm still waiting for the HDs I haven't installed Live yet. I've only got an old IDE drive at the moment, which obviously is the bottleneck of my system. 2 HDs in RAID 1 should give better results (and no I don't have the money for a SSD drive).
i7 g720 + 3x2 GB RAM (triple channel) + MSI X58 Pro mobo + generic nVidia < 600 euros
I'm running Win 7 RC x64 as 32-bit versions of Windows can't handle more than 4 GB

And yes, it's fast. I do really need to test Live ASAP and pre-order Win 7 at bargain price...

just did a new build with an i7 920. overclocks on stock voltage to 3.66 out of the box, stays cool, fast, stable. yes, it's worth it.

OK, I've run the demo song. Live says 22% CPU max, while my CPUmeter claims only 11% max.

At 96kHz HQ, Live is always at less than 50%, while my CPUmeter hardly reaches 14%. I had to increase the sound buffer though. The most loaded core was always under 50%.

I'm using an Asus P6T Deluxe v2. Like i said, i got the company who built it, Scan, to do the overclocking for me. That way it's under guarantee if anything goes wrong. They charge £80 to overclock it to a quicker speed than the 975 extreme which is £471.00 more expensive :D

I'm using one right now as I type this on a new Dell XPS Studio. It is really fast...especially paired with my 6GB RAM.
