OT: DUNE

Post by pedx1ng » Sat Jul 04, 2009 1:20 pm

I watched the Lynch version of Dune last night, it'd been a while since I'd seen it. Anyway, the thing that was funny to me is that the first time they used a thumper, the sound it made instantly conjured to mind the deep four on the floor bass thumping of a modern club. The beginnings of minimal techno?

I love that film, the first half is better than the second though. A majorly flawed masterpiece

I saw it again recently, I was surprised to find I could pretty much recite the script along with the action.
I've not even seen it that many times, perhaps 3, so it was interesting that it stuck in my mind so well.

I think the first time I saw it I was quite young and it made a big impression on me. My 10 year old self was expecting something like Star Wars, and I got drug overlord psychedelic nun mind battle perverts in space.
I never looked back.

Used to love that movie! I really liked the remake the Sci-Fi channel did too. The first Dune they did was ok, cheesy costumes though. Children Of Dune though is still one of my all time favorite things to watch, they did a great job with that. The books were so so for me. Dune was ok, but by God Emperor I was struggling to finish, too damn weird.

I heard that they are redoing Dune for theatrical release AGAIN too.

dune is awesome... books were excellent, but definitely a commitment to get through.
i love the old story about how herbert made a bet with hubbard at a sci fi convention about who could start a religion first...
herbert went on to write dune, hubbard went on to write scientology.
not sure if it is true, but would make sense...
i read the book herberts kid wrote/ finished. terrible.

Big fan of the books and the Lynch film as well. I've read most of his son's extensions to the story too... definitely not up to Frank's level, but I was hungry for more Dune.

+ infinity for anything Dune!

the Lynch version got me into the books..
Frank Herbert is now (for 14 years running) my favorite sci-fi author.
lots of his other writings are fillied with snippets/ ideas that culminated in Dune, but are usually pretty dime-store novella stuff. Still a good read on the train

Guaranteed I reread at least one (if not more) every year.

The various subtext can be applied to almost any situation.

when in doubt, do what Shai-Hulud would do.
2.8ghz Quad Mac, Live 9.77, Remote25, Maschine 1, Fa-66 optical link, Samson 65a. Dog hair.. lots.

Well, I'm a complete Dune junkie. I chose Semuta as my stage name, which is of course a Dune reference.

Some think that Semuta was Herbert's prediction of rave culture.

I re read the books every couple years. I love the old series(not written by the son). I thought the movie sucked but the books are excellent.

The movies were one of the biggest commercial disasters in the history of film. But to David Lynch's credit he manage to pick himself up and make some great movies afterwards. Pity he's totally out of his mind these days.

PITY?

last time i checked the best thing david lynch could ever do for his films is go off the deep end.

if that means dropping acid or meditating with thousands of kids...so be it.

That's an extremely good point, although I suspect there's a limit. I just hope he never makes a film about transcendental meditation.

ive never felt the urge to watch dune as its one of those fabled hollywood messes. the story of the making of it is as interesting as the idea. there are loads of stories regarding the trouble of making the movie.

BTW - everybody know peter berg [the kingdom, hancock] is planning a remake??
