Well known producers who use only software.

Post by PLacidBasilisk » Mon Jul 06, 2009 4:48 am

I'm interested to know of examples of relatively well known producers who use only software in their music. One or two synths, and MPC or something similar is acceptable but no massive studios, multi-instrumentalists etc.

The first example that comes to my mind is Burial who has made two phenomenally good albums. And apparently he did it all in Soundforge. I find it heartening to know that you don't need rooms full of gear to produce top-shelf stuff, as long as you have the skills and determination you can make it.

I use mostly software, but I also have an external hard dive and a Virus TI... and a few other things, but they're secret.

edit: and a banjo. Perhaps you've heard my latest album? Image

No, we can't make it.

They just tell us that so that competition will be turned away to the wrong direction.

OK yes monitors count. No headphones either, only inbuilt laptop speakers. No scrap that, are there any producers that use sequencing software to make music visually without ever listening to it?

Thom Yorke's solo album as well as the new Fever Ray album were made entirely in Live with softsynths if memory serves, though I can tell you that the Fever Ray album did get its final mixdown done through an analog desk.

half the shite in beatport seem to be like this these days lol

What you need, is what works for you.
Dont just get a certain synth because some known producer is using it.

I love hardware. Cant stand softsynths.

I think most "well known" albums are made in marketing departments. So Quicken, Excel and a dash of Photoshop have probably made* just as many as "well known" producers.

'Always outnumbered never outgunned' by the Prodigy was done entirely in Reason (IIRC). I think they changed tact for the new album. Make of that what you will.

most of Burial's music is made with samples. so, he doesn't count.
