EQ3 colouring fixed in Live 8?

Post by willrjmarshall » Wed Jul 08, 2009 9:13 pm

Hi all,

I've heard a lot of reports that the EQ3 in Ableton colours the sound problematically: and that a lot of people are using patches for EQ8 replicating it instead.

However, using Live 8, I've tried turning the EQ3 on and off and can hear no colouring.

Has this issue been resolved in Live 8, so we can use EQ3 more comfortably?

cheers,
Will.

That wasn´t an "issue". EQ3 was indented to model analog EQ´s, so rather not to be clean and surgical.
It´s even in the manual stated.

From the manual

'Note: The filters in this device are optimized to sound more like a good, powerful analog
filter cascade than a clean digital filter. The 48 dB Mode especially does not provide a
perfect linear transfer quality, resulting in a slight coloration of the input signal even
if all controls are set to 0.00 dB. This is typical behavior for this kind of filter,
and is part of EQ Three's unique sound. If you need a more linear behavior choose 24 dB
Mode or use the EQ Eight.'

Cheers. I didn't realise that.

What are the downsides to using an analog-emulating EQ3? Is it just a matter of taste?

Well, it alters the sound. So if you use Live for DJing, you might want the tracks to sound the way they actually sound. Not different.

But it´not forbidden to use EQ3 as a DJ device.

Well, given that I plan to be chucking my tracks through all sorts of interesting filters: I don't think I care whether it sounds the same so long as it sounds *good*.

I guess the best option is to play with the EQ3 and see if the colouring bothers me at all?

or move onto EQ8 for a more powerful filter. check the tips n tricks 'racks' sticky, there are some EQ8 racks in there that simulate EQ3 style setups.

Oh, I've already got one of those configured: but it's heavier on the space than the EQ3.

OTT, now I've got an APC I don't suppose it really matters: no need to use EQ3 is EQ8 is just as easy?

i like eq3 ... sometimes more than eq8
easier to create extreme eq sounds w/ eq3, like speakerphone effects and things like that
