According to Tabnak, Mohsen Namjoo an Iranian artist and folk singer was sentenced to 5 years in prison for singing lyrics of the Koran in a modern popular style of Music.

Mohsen Namjoo is very popular in Iran and has made a few concerts around the world including in North American cities.

This is further evidence of the government’s ongoing effort to clamp down on artists and musicians.

Further evidence why religion should just go away.
Honestly if people want to believe in a religion then fine keep it to yourself and don't brainwash your kids either.
Better yet, make up your own religion (all the other religions where originally made up by someone) stop being lazy and worshiping someone Else's imaginary friend!

I guess it's a pretty serious offense to muck around with Islam holy texts in that manner. In college, I took a class on the history of the middle east. For one of our group projects, we remixed a prayer call into a hip hop song and made a music video of us praying to go with it. Got an A on the project, but a Muslim girl in the class explained that it would be very bad fucking news if the wrong people were in the classroom when we played the video!

The text of the Quran is unchanged since it was written. Preserved in the exact word for word, dot to dot way it was first layed down. It doesn't lend itself to Hip-Hop style cuts and DJ remixes. The belief is simple: if you don't change it... it can't get fucked up. The bible hasn't been so "lucky"...

It's funny to me that you need to ponder such poignant rhetorical questions here...when you as an israeli should know exactly what it is to suffer & die for freedom, considering how many palestinian civilians are in a hellish limbo of forced exile with no right-of-return...or dying on your doorstep in an open air prison/shooting gallery that they've been herded into by your government, contravening (more so than any other country) all international laws that israel claims to subscribe to. He isn't IN prison.

He was sentenced in absentia, he lives in Vienna.
If he goes home, or gets extradited (unlikely) he'll do time.


And the irony in this thread, as you know, has more to do with the thread-starter's nationality than it does with the prison guard's. Irrespective of Namjoo's fate.
