what the hell are you doing up at 8:30am?!?!?!! ;)
That would explain it. 26 miles, Damn. I'm surprised there was any streets not blocked off.

I forgot to mention at the first stop they were BLASTING GnR's Paradise City through a PA. So wasn't in the mood for that at that hour of the morning on a Sunday.

I naturally get up between 5:30 - 6 AM. So 8:30 is like sleeping in for me/killing my day. :)

Ha! I totally forgot this part of my epic "trapped in the city on a Sunday morning" story. At one of the intesetions I was stopped at this woman came up to my window and straight up said "I just got released from a mental hospital and need a ride home." I was so out of it from the night before and so frutrated with all the blocked streets that I couldn't come up with a real explanation of why I couldn't give her a ride or even tell her to piss off. All I could come up with was "Sorry, I have to go way over there" and just pointed in a general direction. :)

I was there to see Glitch Mob Saturday night by the way. Pretty dissapointed in the performance but that's for another rant.

went to Mighty for the Glitch Mob show in May 2008. spent most of my time in the back room because they way over-sold tickets. way too many people for that small venue. it was ok tho, my best friend was DJing in the back room that night. still had a good time.

I lied about not talking about it.

My issue was they were like Justice squared without the props. 4 dudes on stage with music that sounded exactly like the recordings and released DJ mixes with maybe an extra filter sweep and bass kill here and there. For a crew called Glitch Mob I expected a little more in the performance department.

couldn't tell you how Glitch Mob was... never stood in the main room unless i was trying to work my way through the crowd to the bathroom. i remember not being impressed with the music i heard but not sure if it was them at those times.

Sadly, Nebraska, despite the endless space and much lower population, has the exact same tear-it-down-and-put-a-walmart-there mentality. I suppose that's just the US for you.
LOL!!! Fuck yeah! That taco truck does rock!

I go to SF for shows more than anything. I live in the East Bay just through the tunnel east of Berkeley. If I have a choice between the same show in SF, Oakland or Berkeley give me the latter 2 any day. I wish there were more BART stations, but even then you have to leave before BART closes and that is often too early. I love the diversity and choices in SF, but traffic/parking and the bums drive me crazy. I would so give my cash to many of them, but just as soon as you make a donation and start feeling helpful and better about yourself there's another person hitting you up... and over and over and over again... You have to learn to say "not today" or nothing at all. Still, on foot is the way to be in the City.

I know you don't really want to wing it, but seriously... wing it. I mean, have a basic plan and all, but leave room for cool shit. You could be taking a piss somewhere and see a flier for something dope as hell that you'd love to see. Happens to me all the time. Seriously.

Most of newer America has become a cookie cutter world. Sad. We loose our identity to corporate table tossing more everyday.

So yes, we're all booked up, and I even got a quaint hotel in Hayes Valley, which is great because one of the only two good coffee shops in town is there, and I won't have to go out of my way to go there like I did last time. Must have good coffee.

I have a couple other quick questions for Tone or any other resident...the schedules are helpful, but what are some of your favorite venues for music? Places that consistently have good weird bands and electronic artists. Not necessarily dancey, more about the music. And preferably with some decent cocktails. And don't generally cost $23 to go see the show.

Also restaurants. We're both into asian and mediterranean, I'm really into seafood though she's not, just anyplace that's reasonable and fairly awesome regardless of genre.

And one other thing I was hoping to find last year and didn't...is there a real seafood market there somewhere? Like not the cheesy part of the wharf, but maybe all those piers over on the bay side?

I don't wanna take too much time out of anyone's day, but just throw out some stuff off the top of your head. Thanks all for your help, and I'm extremely pleased to be going back...didn't think it was going to happen again so soon.

Terenga Thursdays at Little Baobab!!

I'm just gonna throw that out there because it's my friend's gig.

what's the other? I'm impressed you know about the Blue Bottle. I quit coffee but the smells are intense even a block away.

there are places all over town, the venues in 'the list.' there are dozens. all I'd say is avoid Ruby Skye like the plague. the Elbo Room is a nice local's spot. Cafe Dunord is a nice hipster hangout. then there's Slims, Fillmore, Warfield, American Music Hall, Bottom Of The Hill, The Independent, The Hemlock, Bimbos... I'm forgetting a lot.

you want chin stroking music, cheap elegant cocktails and a low cover? try Disneyland. ;) I go for the music and strong drink. one place comes to mind, 111 Minna GAllery might be the scene you want.
http://www.111minnagallery.com/
it's mostly an art gallery but they have DJs and bands some nights.

Supperclub is that on steroids, it's far from cheap but it will definitely leave an impression on you. we went there, drinks, dinner and wine, $300, totally memorable experience.
http://www.supperclub.com/

haven't been there in a while but for jazz, Yoshi's is nice.
http://www.yoshis.com/sanfrancisco
Also restaurants. We're both into asian and mediterranean, I'm really into seafood though she's not, just anyplace that's reasonable and fairly awesome regardless of genre.
http://www.sfgate.com/food/top100/
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/listings/ ... 9?Submit=1 <-- Michael Bauer, THE SF food critic. that's hands down the defacto list of great restaurants in the Bay Area.

for seafood I love McCormick and Kuleto's
http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/Loc ... intSt.aspx
I seriously doubt it's ever been on Michael Bauer's top 100 list, but the food (seafood) is solid and the views are right out onto the bay overlooking Alcatraz and the Golden Gate. it's in a touristy area, so go midweek. they make a GREAT manhattan.

for Mediteranean, again, there are tons of places. the last good one we hit was La Mediterranee, both SF locations are tasty.
http://www.lamediterranee.net/

one culinary treat is Dosa, amazing south Indian food. I never have a clue what I'm ordering but it always looks and tastes great. very popular spot.
http://www.dosasf.com/
And one other thing I was hoping to find last year and didn't...is there a real seafood market there somewhere? Like not the cheesy part of the wharf, but maybe all those piers over on the bay side?
the wharf is the wharf, that's where the boats come in, all the piers are on the bay side. the seafood is fresh there. locals go to our nearest Asian market, there are also some good ones in the Mission, hundreds of these places are all over. try around Clement St, between ~6th and 10th Ave. if it's seasonal you can go to Half Moon Bay and eat sushi grade fish ON the boats at Pillar Point Harbor.
http://www.smharbor.com/pillarpoint/
this is also where that HUGE wave spot known as 'Mavericks' is.

you want to hit The Ferry Building. amazing food ingredients can be bought there.
http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/
check out 'Out The Door' when you're there, it's the takeout version of one of the best Asian restaurants in SF, The Slanted Door
http://www.slanteddoor.com/

probably the best meal I've ever had is at Gary Danko, holy @#$%^!!!
http://www.garydanko.com/
tie required but it's not snooty or snobby, very friendly proper service and epic food. get the tasting menu with wine pairings, EPIC food. although the wife leans toward Fleur De Lys which is Hubert Keller's restaurant. if you don't know who he is... ;) :D
http://www.fleurdelyssf.com/
be ready to spend at least $500 at either, totally worth it.

right where you're staying in Hayes Valley is Absinthe.
http://www.absinthe.com/

the Hayes Valley Bar and Grill is nice. avoid these places on Fri/Sat nights before 8pm, the bridge and tunnel people raid the area before they go to the symphony, loud, clueless, obnoxious jackasses.

another one to walk to from your hotel is on lower Haight St, R&M.
http://www.rnmrestaurant.com/

for some AMAZING cocktails and interesting food, on upper Haight is Alembic.
http://www.alembicbar.com/
go on the off hours.

also on Haight street, Kan Zaman is cheap and very relaxing. Magnolia is a brewpub and the sister restaurant to Alembic. Cha Cha Cha is another popular spot, go on an off night, cheap tapas. actually the best tapas I know of are at Ramblas
http://www.ramblastapas.com/

I dunno, I could go on and on for pages. Firecracker, Zuni Cafe, Nopa, DelFina, Alamo Square, Luna Park, A13, Boulevard... check that Michael Bauer list.

if you like Belgium beers, hit up the Toronado on lower Haight.
http://www.toronado.com/
you can get a tasty sausage from Rosamunde next door and bring it into the Toronado. these are very close to Robotspeak, well worth a look in there.

The other is Ritual in the Mission district. They're actually much more hardcore than the Blue Bottle, which I found to be potentially delicious, but inconsistent depending on who was making the drinks. It's my binness to know, I roast for a living. There are only about 20 places in the US that are worth a shit, literally, so it's pretty easy to keep track of them. :)
And one other thing I was hoping to find last year and didn't...is there a real seafood market there somewhere? Like not the cheesy part of the wharf, but maybe all those piers over on the bay side?

Yeah, I was just wondering about the stuff further down, south of the ferry building and the bay bridge.

We did check that out last year...it was one of the first places I went. We also came back for the farmer's market, and I had yet another espresso shot from the blue bottle's kiosk. :)

Maybe someday we'll be able to afford this sort of food, or anything on that top 100 list. At this point, we're on more of a McDonald's budget. What the hell do you do for a living, anyway? 8O

This sounds more in our price range, and I do indeed enjoy an expensive and alcohol-laden Belgian. I even own a couple proper glasses.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions; looking forward to getting back there. It's a great city.

Actually the inflation has gotten pretty bad around here. Its $399.00 for a Happy Meal now. Its so hard to get good help that they just moved the decimal and called it a day.
