Ableton Forum

I recently have found a Roland Sh-101 analog synth and an analog Oberheim Dx drum machine. So now what im looking to do is sync these up with each other and abletons sequencer, so I suppose I would need a MIDI to CV/Gate Converter (Id also like to have ableton play sounds through the oscillators and modulations on my roland sh-101) so my question is; would a CV Gate converter be the tool I need to do all this, and if so what would be some good models for someone on a tight budget.

Also the sh 101 is monophonic and the dx is polyphonic, not sure if weather the instrument is mono/poly would make a difference in the type of converter I would need.

if you're feeling froggy you could get a motu ultralite mk3 and volta. that would allow you to send audio to and from your synths into ableton, plus giving you a automation capabilities of any cv inputs into your analogs. as well as adding extra eg's, lfo's and step sequencers for all of the goodness you could dream. also i think it has the ability to tune the oscillators...

oh yeah forgot to mention though it's only for au's on osx

i thought that was an analog to cv convertor.. it allows you to sequence notes and everything in between.

damn! checked out the link, that thing looks pretty nice. much more knobadge then the moog cp-251

The point of volta is that you can just skip the shitty midi resolution and send CV straight out of your interface into the vintage stuff, isn't it? All while also using the interface to bring the audio back in to the computer.

You need waveforms and such to send, like this now-famous guy.

im using motu's volta in live with a moog voyager old school....works as it should...a bit of latency but lives track delay fixes it easily....
You will need dc coupled audio interface that is compatible

i thought that was an analog to cv convertor.. it allows you to sequence notes and everything in between.

If my synth does not have an external audio input, how do those motu's allow me to send audio into my synth and process it?

The 101 has CV ins.
Volta sends CV (not audio) through the audio outs of the interface (via magic I think).

The DX - at the least - has a clock input which will accept a pulse wave from Volta and keep it relatively in sync.

This may seem kind of a headache to set up at first - but you'll never regret it once you get this old gear to track/sync.

Well as tempting as the MOTU volta and mk3 seem, those would run up prices quite a bit. Would Syncing the 101 with an external clock, being the DX, then using a Kenton USB Solo MIDI to CV/Gate converter into ableton also do the trick?
