The best way to get fans and followers online is to generate fans and followers in the real world.

I am not saying don't do the awesome online stuff (like Trent Reznor covered), in fact definitely do that, and do it well. However, ANYONE can create social networking profiles, ANYONE can release music for free, ANYONE can spam sites.

One thing you can't do online? Rock a show, rock a club, make someone's night memorable. You can't tour online either, in fact, a lot of artists have a hard time performing (or performing well) and booking tours. It's tough, but it can be a great way to set yourself apart.

The word FREE has amazing powers... I doubt that you are going for the free blowjobs suggestion... although I think it will make people look... if you actually do it you will be very famous (for the wrong reasons/industry) but FREE _______ is good (stickers?). Chicks love to love shit. Fact is if people *think* they know who you are you will be more popular. Hearing your name over and over helps... SPAM sucks so don't go crazy but the 3 Ps mentioned earlier are key... longevity or perceived longevity can breed fanbase.

I agree, but I also think it has the power to give the impression that something if of less value because it's free.

The important thing is to develop a well-rounded marketing mix, NOT JUST online only, similarly, for electronic music, you can't just tour and have no online presence at all.

Instead of only having music for free, I would have some for free, some for pay at all the normal retailers. I would also be flattered when someone posted my music on a torrent.
