Eq question

Post by eggnchips » Sat Sep 05, 2009 5:49 pm

I'm making a sample based house track.
I'm looping a really small 1 bar sample that I like but within this sample is a really aggresive snare hit that makes the ears bleed.
I've tried all I can to eq out the snare's dynamics but doing this also removes the character of the sample, making the rest of it very muffled and quiet.
Any tips on softening up this snare hit would be appreciated.

Thanks.

This doesn't answer your question, but you might REX it, remove the slice that is the snare, replace it with something similar (or not) that doesn't make the ears bleed?

You wouldn't even need Recycle, you could also perform this surgery in Live..

if ya don't wanna slice, (which is great btw) you could use a compressor - set it to it's fastest attack and release to fast-ish ratio 2:1 or more. Bring in threshold until the snare starts to lower and the rest of the loop is untouched.

voila 8)

if it's just 1 measure, lay it out in arrange view and make your own midi version of it. line up the midi kick where the audio kick is, same with the snare, then drop in samples you do like.

IMO don't use effects to make things sound good when they can sound good from the start.

If you like the snare sound but just want it to be quieter in that loop, just use a clip envelope to drop the vol on the hit.

or just put in one of those "HOOOOO"'s and "AWWW YEAAH" and "KNOWWHATIMSAYIN?" that rappers do each time the snare hits.

+1

or if you really need to isolate that hit for e.qing/processing then right click and choose "slice to loop" (iirc) then add your process plug to that particular channel only. Then resample back to a 1 bar loop.

... Try to double the snare. Eq, filter, compress or whatever it needs on one track till it sounds to your likings (even if it doesn't have exactly that character you like, anymore) and then mix in (lower volume) the original snare for the character.
... Multiband compression (as mentioned before) might also help!

Compression seemed to help. Cutting out the snare is not feasable as it makes up a big part of the smaple.
I'd like to look into multiband but need to work it out first.
