Q: How to get that "megaphone" vocal sound?

Post by kramerica » Wed Sep 16, 2009 8:59 pm

Any ideas on how to get that vocal megaphone sound without actually using a megaphone? Flaming Lips uses an actual megaphone alot but I'm wondering what would be good for home recording (i.e. effects chain).

i just tried an eq 3 kill the lows boost the mids cut the highs
into an over drive.. play with it a bit
plop on a reverb "standard room" seems like a good start point
into a simple delay linked for that sunday sunday sunday race day :)

also if you hold the mic about half way into your palm and make a fist it seems to help allot.

a combination of saturator and eq may do it
set the eq to cut (aprox.) below 300hz and cut above 3000hz
that and a little drive on the saturator
you may also want to try some reverb
and/or changing the order of effects(like put the saturator before or after the eq/reverb)
(instead of saturator you could also use redux, overdrive or vinyldistorion)

Thanks for the recs. I'm gonna try and keep it "in house" and use abes effects. Plus, I have guitar rig. Just wanted to skip the experimentation and get some solid tips before attempting.

you'll need to put a short 80ms slap delay for the wall reflective thing or try a long obvious predelay on a short hall verb.

Overdrive + reverb plugins ought to do it in Live 8.

+1 for the slap delay for that "live amplified PA" effect. Crucial.

Cut the lows, cut the highs, boost the mids, distort to taste and slapback. :)

I wonder if there's a Live EQ preset that does this. :?

Some more extreme settings of Live's Vinyl Distortion device might get you close to what you want.
