Live's output volume lower than other audio devices?

Post by hakey » Thu Oct 08, 2009 8:59 pm

On my comp Live is significantly quieter than all of my other audio programs - any ideas why?

I'm just off to get me some popcorn and settle in for this one.

Funnily enough, I noticed this today. I was doing some writing and had my AK1 output up at about just-under-halfway, and when I switched to iTunes to reference some stuff, iTunes was WAY, WAY louder than Live; not just 'oh, these tracks are mastered' louder, either.

Curious.

Well I hope I'm not about to start a flame fest!

Perhaps I didn't explain myself properly.

Live is a good deal quieter than other 'default' or common use audio devices on my computer, so that if I've been using Live and I then go to, say, listen to a track with Media Player, or watch a vid on the youtubes I have to remember to turn my amp down - and by a fair amount.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about - not a subjective 'loudness' issue.

trace the signal path. it's probably that Live accesses your sound card directly whereas the other stuff uses your OS's volume control. play with all those settings and learn about your computer.

they're different signal paths.

Well, that's what I'd been thinking. I have poked around with the settings in "Sounds and Audio Devices" without much joy - yet.

Maybe your ASIO driver is set to a lower volume than the other one. Most ASIO soundcards have a dedicated control panel where you can adjust the volume. It's been a while that I used Live on Windows, but there should be an ASIO Setup button in the audio preferences. This opens the control panel of your soundcard. Good luck!

I have the same issues. Came here looking for a fix, and found this thread.

Happens for me whether I'm using internal speakers, headphones or an external USB Audio I/O device.

It didn't happen until recently. Unfortunately, I upgraded to a MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard and Live 8 all at the same time.
