You can hear them filling in the background complimenting the main beat from the get go, but they really kick in around 1:35 - clack clack clacka diga diga clicka clacka...
Very metallic, almost clangy sound - like a bunch of cowbells or something. It sounds so awesome, I'm just curious what in the hell it is. I'm sure it's something really simple that someone here knows.
Killer video to boot.

Re: What kind of drums are these in this killing joke track?
It is most probably darabuka.
There are some Indian drums with similar sound- like nagara, high pitched dholak, dhol and more. Also south Indian Thavil has sound of the sort. Such sounds are not difficult to emulate (perhaps except Thavil) through adjusting pitch and playing technique.
See the video where Sivamani emulates Bhangra dhols on timbales (@ around 1:30). There is also the bad boy Palanivel on the Thavil, worth checking out.

BTW. It is Tabla not tablas and it is definitely not present in the recording- unlike above mentioned, Tabla cant be emulated on anything due to rather complex of sound, just like mrdanga).

Thanks rikhyray, both for the info and for the clarification on Tabla vs. "tablas"

you raaaang?
I don't know what those drums are called, but Jaz Coleman has done a heap of collaborations with Arab, especially Egyptian, musicians. It could be Hossam Ramzy the master Egyptian percussionist, who Jaz has worked with quite a few times.
