Joystick as midi controller?
Joystick as midi controller?
I know this isn't a new idea. Is anybody here doing it with Live though? ...if so, how?
...and could anybody suggest a program to do this on a mac? ...there's some cool joysticks out there and I thought it would be cool, even if just for XY controls.

A friend of mine uses to joysticks for his livesets, but it's with a PC though. PM me if you want to get in touch with him. He plays regularly here in Oslo and elsewhere so the sticks are quite road tested by now.mersault wrote:I know this isn't a new idea. Is anybody here doing it with Live though? ...if so, how?

I've offered him a set of steering wheels and pedals too, so he can drive the set around but somehow that's not his style and the joysticks are

I use plogue bidule for this. You can also use max.
And I know there must be freewares for that, too.

Junxion:

There is a lite version, with an upgrade to the full one, which supports several protocals (e.g.OSC, MIDI). Very powerful.

Junxion looks like a really cool app, but 75 quid? C'mon!

+1 for Bidule. It's great for back-end contoller config stuff...chapelier fou wrote:I use plogue bidule for this. You can also use max.

Bidule looks cool, but more than what I'm looking for. I'm just looking for a sort of "patch" to link a joystick to map to midi in Live. Junxion looks like its on the right track, but so expensive!

Wiidi - Wiimote MIDI, I've also heard of Xbox 360 controllers controlling live wirelessly, Nintendo DS.

So here is my idea :mersault wrote:Bidule looks cool, but more than what I'm looking for. I'm just looking for a sort of "patch" to link a joystick to map to midi in Live. Junxion looks like its on the right track, but so expensive!
Ask someone to do exactly what you want in max, then you can use the patch in max runtime. I can check it out, but I really would prefer not, since I don't really knox the "hid" object, and since I really have no time these days, uh, weeks, uh, months.

Re: Joystick as midi controller?
oh shit, on my old ibook I had a program installed that allowed me to use a 5$ usb joystick as midi controller. And no, it wasn't junxion or a max-hack, it was a little shareware application. It had a nagscreen that cam up everytime when I booted the computer. I don't remember the name.
It worked flawlessly, and during some time I used the game controller during my sets for applying effects.
Today I use the wiimote with osculator and I am quite happy with it. I believe osculator recognizes also other devices, could be that your joystick gets recognized as well.

Re: Joystick as midi controller?
Osculator's great and works with quirky stuff like the 3Dconnexion Spacenavigator which I just picked up. Peepzabala what kind of adapter do you use for the Wiimote?
That shareware app, would it have been rejoice?

Re: Joystick as midi controller?
now I remember. It was USB Overdrive:
http://www.usboverdrive.com/USBOverdriv ... ation.html
It actually doesn't convert joystick to midi, but it let's you convert gamepad messages to keys or keystrokes etc. So I assigned keys, not midi notes or CCs to the gamepad.

Re: Joystick as midi controller?
I'm sorry if this is what you meant, but are any of you actually using Osculator with live? How is it on plug-ins?
