What is a DAW?

Post by bendybones » Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:53 am

Some say it's the software like Live / Logic etc
Some say it's the whole system ie Software + PC + Soundcard

Seems like option 1 is what most people think / will answer.
But option 2 makes more sense to me.

So which is it?
MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, OS X 10.5.8, Live 8 Suite, Logic Studio 9, Ultralite Mk3

I think it's past your bedtime.

They're both the same answer anyways. Audio software isn't gonna be much use to you without a soundcard and a computer.

just the software - When people ask which 'Digital Audio Workstation' you are on they want to know logic/live/cubase etc - not what other gear you have...

Clever stuff.

Here is my more surreal answer.

Why is?

A DAW.

i tend to agree w/this view. my laptop is my D.A.W. I use it to work on music...digitally. the software is just one part of that system.
Though one should take note of the fact that i have this system stripped of everything save Live and some system utilities like disc imaging software etc... And I use this system exclusively for said D.A.W. work.
If someone asks me what D.A.W. I run (because that happens like...all the time lol) I tell them a Lenovo Thinkpad running Win XP and Ableton Live 8.

to me the op's question is like asking what is a mac or a pc? you ask some people and they'll start talking about operating systems...others will talk about the total system. both answers are correct but not quite complete. i know this guy that runs OS X on his "PC" and vice verca
Ableton is not my DAW...its my sequencer/plug in host etc

I think its a maliable acronym really. Sometimes I refer to just the software was a DAW - as in "What DAW are you running?". Whereas, logically, a workstation is a complete area where you work, and you cant work without a computer running the software/monitors etc.
Then again, Would you refer to an analogue mixing desk/reet-to-reel/etc in a studio as a AAW - Analoge Audio Workstation? :?
