Good point.
I think that music today reflects our lifestyle more than ever.
Music goes at the speed of Communication Technology.
A new PC every two/three years, a new iPod every year if you like.
New Music every week, every day if you want, for free.
Big names from the past are still big names.
They established a mass of followers in the 70's or 80's and in the 90's.
People still fill arenas for names like Sting, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Aerosmith, and many others
but success today as became a chimera. Let's took a recent one: Tokyo Hotel or Rasmus.
Their first Album (or should I say song) reached top charts positions but after that?
Who will remember them in 5 years or more? Music is a consumable commodity nowadays
and people of any age except the 40's which I belong to, get what they found in a specific
moment in time. I do not know what will happen in the future but I'm almost sure that when
today's big names from the past start disappearing they will be substituted by new ones but
at a different rate than in the past. The Net changed everything and there are as many artists
as there are consumers if not even more. I'm sure that making a living out of Music in general
will get harder.

That's kinda the point. Tool have been going ages too - almost 20 years. What recent artist (emerged in the last 5 years) will be still around at this level in the future? Can't think of any...

beats you're just getting old. I wouldn't ask this of a 35 year old, I'd ask a teenager or college kid. it's difficult to think of a band that's truly only 5 years old. I'd say any of them, you just never know. Weezer, Foo Fighters, Aerosmith, Green Day and others are still alive and kicking. the Cure put out an album last year, Morrissey put one out last month.

fuck DJ worship, I hope in 30 years, no 5 years DJ worship dies. how many DJs have even lasted 30 years?

Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, U2 and Oasis's reunion tour (in the UK, but in the States they will be lucky to fill a bar on the street corner) will still be filling arenas after I'm dead - they're like cockroaches, you can't kill the buggers. Keith Richards would probably survive a direct nuclear strike, that man is unkillable ;)

Other than this - you're screwed. Most of Tone's list goes back to the 80s and early 90s. And the recording industry is ruthless these days, any sign of flagging sales and chop, chop - see you at an Indian Reserve Casino next year if you're lucky.

I really don't know how music will be in 20years forward... So I keep optimistic
I'm glad imagining myself with white long hair and beard on stage mixing on ableton ubberlive 50.3 with crazy mind linked controlers... The thought midi control will raise and all gonna be cool

I would probably look at the new Dj's and their silly numeric turntables and maybe will hardly regret the vinyl era while saying : "that was good time" lol

How many are still packing stadiums now and were 30 years ago (1979)?

Madonna wasn't even a solo artist yet, U2 'just' released their first album, so we're pretty much left to Aerosmith, The Stones, Eric Clapton, Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan... Rockers of the 70's that kept rocking.

My guess is that artists that are able to sell out stadiums 30 yrs from now will be of mostly that type of genre... and probably lady gaga ;)

hm.. as djing (the way we have it with electronic music) technically can't even exist for 30 years.. :)

but i know quite some who where at the start of the electronic clubbing there (around 1990 or so, in switzerland it was) and still are very popular and famous in here for the very same stuff they do today. that's at least a 20years career countrywide "just with djing". not bad. and i guess carl cox is around since quite some time.

we have quite some bands around that no one believed around the millenium change that they stay for more than 1 hit, or maybe two. some still are alive.

so just check what's out right now. most will die again, like always. but some will survive. again. like always.

although I see your point on today's music, I don't think stadium shows are over.

Think about it, most people's musical taste don't evolve beyond their teenage/early twenties years.
Fast forward 20 years later, any big music acts that have kept doing what they do best with some sort of consistency will still fill stadiums full of people who like their music when they were teenagers. That's why bands like Motley Crue can still do a comeback tour (not because they make relevant metal).

Recent artists like Mika, Fall Out Boy, Beyoncé Knowles, Lil' Wayne, maybe even the Jonas Brothers, if they don't totally drown their career with a pedo sex scandal or something of the sort will be able to do very lucrative comeback tours in the 2020's. Every kid born in the early 90's will now be in their 30's, have a job and be able to afford the 300$ for a Fallout Boy ticket in some gigantic arena.

It's the almost the same for Madonna or U2 these days. Most of their fans are people who were teenagers in the 80's. Of course, they had hits in the 90's and a following, etc. But out of all the pop acts that they listened to in the 80's, these were the 'best' that outlast Bananarama or Men Without Hats in their memories.

I'm a kid of the 90's, and although my musical tastes constantly change, I see people of my age that go to these Green Day concerts, or Offspring, Korn, whatever..

And when you've got 2 young kids, a mortgage, and only get to see a few concerts in the year, you're going to go see that band that almost defines your adolescence. You're not going to try to discover new bands at the hip place with a 5$ cover charge.

So yes, in the future arenas will continue to be filled by fans of pop acts that have not died of autoerotic asphyxia or a drug overdose after a failed 7th album.

my 2 cents

This isn't about being out of touch or "I don't understand kids and their music today." This is the changing music industry and people getting access to more and more constantly and having a short attention span. When we were growing up all we had access to was what radio forced on us and what we saw if we ventured out to the local scene. Now people have access to 1,000 times that without leaving the house or listening to the radio.

Same can be said about the movie industry and how comparatively short a time frame even a successful movie goes from theater release to television debut and then distant memory.

I just threw DJ in there because a lot of people on here are about DJs and DJing. It's that moment in history.
I believe age affects one's musical acumen for new musical trends.

the industry sucking does not mean people aren't grinding out new music in their garages, kids still have angst they'll form band after band. there's a 15 year old kid on the forum looking to spend a pile of money on Live and keyboards. maybe the world would be better off if he spent it on a Les Paul and Marshall stack like the same kid would have done in the 80s, be a musician rather than a scene launching DJ.

radio was great in the 80s, no Clear Channel. music wasn't forced on us back in the day. the web is an amazing resource for new music though, agreed on that.

as for stadium tours, touring is more important than ever, so perhaps there will be more stadium tours.

I do hear what you're saying from other people, I don't agree but I have no answer. I've heard the same from an old guy that only listens to Renaissance music because he's heard all the classical music and rock sucks. I've heard the same from another guy our age because he just gave up on new music.

yes, the industry is a mess. charts and awards shows get to be more and more of a joke every year. I think it would suck to be a teenager today, look at what they have to choose from, or do we just not get it? ask them, they'll say we don't get it.
