Dave Smith Tetra - who has one? Thoughts?

Post by freqn » Sat Nov 21, 2009 3:18 pm

I just got turned on two the little beast last weekend and starting to save some $$. The only thing I don't like is a lack of knobs, but I can always hook up my BCR. Seems ideal for a compact rig. Do any of you owners have any thoughts, pros, cons, etc? Thanks!

I bought one a couple of weeks ago. Still exploring it but pretty pleased with it so far. Deleted one of the factory banks and started making a bank of my own sounds.

You mention lack of knobs - there is a free editor with it so you can set up your patch then assign the four knobs as appropriate.

As you say it is a good compact little package.

I have a mopho.. The free software editor crashes occasionally and soundtower refuses to acknowledge the vst support they originally promised in Q1 this year, but the instrument in itself is kickass.. DSI is a great company, just a bit of a shame they choose soundtower to create their software editors as I for one am not impressed.. also it is impossible to type in values with the keyboard so it could be a hassle sometimes and the virtual in/outs don't work with live.. Also be warned that live doesn't handle nrpn so not all parameters are possible to automate easily, but this isn't such a big deal really

The mopho (and tetra) are great instruments; but they're not perfect (but then again; nothing is)

I wouldn't. Same price range as the SEM.

Guaranteed the SEM is fatter sounding, better filters etc. No slight on Dave Smith, nice stuff, just Oberheim is in a class by himself.
For a little more the CV version is even better.

Have one but still getting use to it... You will need midi yoke to set up virtual midi in/out when using the editor via usb bus... Sound wise it is great... Got this the same time I upgraded to Live 8 from Live 4 so I have a lot of figuring out to do at the moment..

Downloaded midi yoke and midi ox.
anybody want to guide me through how to set it up, so that i can mess about with the mopho editor and still send midi to the mopho at the same time?

Just use midi yoke... Install it as described... Here's what you do assuming you are on PC...

In Lives midi prefs use USB audio as your midi out/in...

Open the tetra editor and select midi yoke virtual 1 in/out...

Mess around with this and you'll get it...

I'll fire up my laptop soon and give you the deets as i am doing this from memory... It is fairly straight forward...
