You can't delete files from a "Smart" playlist as they are added and removed to/from the playlist based on the rules in place. You can however delete files from a standard (static) playlist as the playlist content is defined by the user.

The guys states that apple had made an update to editabilty of smart playlists. His September 2009 should work in the current version of itunes

Cool - I'll try this if it becomes necessary.
While we're on the topic of Itunes, though: does anyone know if there's a way to drag your entire music folder into Itunes, and have Itunes only add to the library files
and folders that have not already been added to the library? I have the library on one internal disk and on one external, and keeping them synchronised is a pain in the
arse.
