Bill M'F'in Laswell
Re: Bill M'F'in Laswell
A big laswell fan here too. Like another poster mentioned, a lot of material to sort through, some are gems, others a little more mediocre. The important thing is that he has always done things off the beaten path.

Re: Bill M'F'in Laswell
I have a friend who discovered Bill Laswell had sampled his work on one of his releases, so he called Bill up and asked him about it. Bill's response was 'Feel free to sample any of my work." Hehehe....
Re: Bill M'F'in Laswell
I still think his album Lo. Def Pressure is one of the coolest drum and ass records ever.

You may also want to check out Bill's new project Method of Defiance. It's simply amazing.
MOD is out on RareNoise Records, you can find it here: http://www.rarenoiserecords.com
Doremifa, thanks a lot for quoting my album with Bill and Kondo man, I still love that album a lot.
I work with Bill since 15 years and I can tell you the man is simply unique!

bill is AMAZING ...i wish more players and producers had
the kind of "balls" to DO what THEY FEEL as opposed to
what they think OTHERS might feel...based on what is selling at the time!
plus one on what everyone else said AND he produced future shock...
you all know the famous dope cut ROCKIT right!?!?!

he is one of a few producers that "get it"
just my 2 cents

totally agree

Huge fan and major influence!
You can get a lot of clean samples of most Axiom releases with these loop libraries:
Loads of clean guitar lines by Buckethead and Nicky Skopelitis, even some of the obscure Stratus-era material as well.
They were released around the time he hit a creative lull, so they were a nice way to create my own Laswell tracks. Of course now he's back in full force with his Method of Defiance project, these loops libraries are nice to have features in some of my productions...

Re: Bill M'F'in Laswell
yep, Lo. Def Pressure is my fav DnB record. It sounds so free of loops (what actual DnB suffers imo), and accent is moved from beats to Laswell groovy bass, where beats are a bit lighter and more random + plus indian tabla and ambients.
I have also remembered his "Sacred System - Nagual Site" album, which I did like tremendously! Check it out too!

Re: Bill M'F'in Laswell
One of the most frustrating musical experiences I ever had was watching Solaris (Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Jaki Leibezeit, Harold Budd and Graham Haynes) playing live at The Arches in Glasgow. I was very hyped about seeing all of these guys but especially two of the finest bass players on the same stage. But something was wrong... I couldn't really feel the bass... then I realised I couldn't really hear it either! Bill and Jah were jamming away, happy as fuck, but there was no sound relating to their actions!
To this day I maintain the bass cabs had either blown or were not plugged in - the only sound you could hear from the bass end was coming from the stage monitors! I spoke to the soundman and he said it was all fine... aaaaaaaargh! I had several really bad experiences like that in The Arches around that time and I reckon it was an amateur sound man with a hearing impairment. Very disappointing. Like getting a text message saying "Hi, it's Scarlett Johansen, I'm coming round right now to fuck your brains out". Only it turns out to be David Johansen.
