And if you have the money get a 30 inch dell 3007wfp monitor 2560x1600 (Amazing how many tracks VSTs and other stuff you can have open and view all at the same time) I love mine
Graphic card geforce 7950GT which supports 2560x1600

Ive had plenty of Asus boards fail. They are no better or worse in terms of reliability than the other major makers, Gigabyte, MSI etc. All PC components fail eventually!

When you deal with enough computers on a large enough scale, you see everything fail!

Yeah true, the only true question is "who fails less ?". And I must say that asus boards did pretty good job for me as well.

I thought around 1.500$. And I'm actually living in Wash, DC. Didn't update my profile when I moved...
Is that enough for a decent system ?

But - hey thanks ! Didn't expect that kind of profound help ;-)

Vodka :D

now you just need a big case (to fit that huge gfx card) and some drives. I like Lian Li cases, but they are a bit expensive. I suggest looking at Micro Center for a case you like.

this is the blu-ray burner I have, it's solid.

Pioneer Black 12X BD-R 16X DVD+R SATA Internal Blu-ray/DVD/CD $219

or if you just need dvd/cd

Pioneer Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW $35

Funny, took me some time to figure out that I still need a case.
I'll order that stuff and then I'll definetely try overclocking.
There are some tutorials that say it's the perfect CPU for overclocking....

We are also going to buy or perhaps build 2 new i7 desktops sometime early 2010. Will post final spec up nearer time but the 2 new mac systems we were looking at buying where coming in at just under 5k uk each (without monitors). The 2 pc desktops inc 1 x 32inch ?
2 x 2 inch and 1 x 19 inch monitors each arrive at just over 4 k uk .Thats inc the 8 monitors. And with win7 receiving rave reviews then we are nearly 100% sold. Money isnt the issue as we can afford to buy the macs but 13k versus 4k and all the other benefits like being able to uprade cpu's easily offering a workstation a longer working life before replacement (i spent 5 full days reinstalling our software on a new machine last time)

that build looks decent except for the hard drives.
a computer is only as fast as it's slowest component and you picked one of the slowest hard drives possible.

i would suggest the caviar black or velociraptor. i know they aren't cheap but the write and read speeds are well worth it. especially since we're dealing with software that needs to constantly access the hard drives. velociraptor for OS and programs, caviar black for samples.

and don't forget you need an OS for this build. i think people tend to overlook that detail when piecing together a system. i'd go for w7 pro but home premium would be fine, too.

the video card is kind of overkill for an audio pachine, but if you were to work with video production at all, it would be necessary. it's not necessary for simply watching movies. not a fan of nvidia cards though. prefer ATI cards and AMD processors.

you're getting awfully close to your budget now. hope you have a monitor and keyboard/mouse already.
