[OT] how hard it is to learn/use Pro Tools?

Post by Goran@Irrupt » Wed Dec 02, 2009 4:55 pm

hi,
i'm a long time Nuendo/Live user, but i might get a really big job that requires from me to have a Pro Tools in my studio. i'm this close to ditch the whole thing 'couse i've heard so many stories about how hard it is to use it and everything is kinda 100 clicks away etc etc...
i don't know, maybe PT is greatly improved and new version works fine, that's why i need you to tell me how much hassle would i have to use it every day? i would not use midi for that job, just audio recording and mixing of that material.
thanks.

I always though Pro Tools was pretty easy to use. I never liked their midi, but overall I'd rather use it than Logic. I'd like to get the new version of Pro Tools LE, but I'm using a motu interface and I really like Live. Pro Tools is an easy app to learn IMO.

Routing of signals sometimes gives me a headache but the rest is pretty straight forward I would say. If a well payed / important job depends on it I would strongly recommend to take that chance. ProTools is not "horrible" to use, it is just a bit outdated conceptually.
I am sure you'll get used to it very quickly. And you can Rewire Live to it ;-)

you just install it and it puts hit songs onto your drive, you only have to specify the path.

PT is fairly easy, straight forward and if you have the chance, yup learn it, it can come in handy.

good PT operators are still in demand.

proprietary interface/giant dongle nonsense sux barls, really, the term "free product support" is not in Digidesign's vocabulary, and don't expect timely responses via email or phone regarding whatever issues you may have...patience is extremely important when dealing with Doh! Tools. Some people on here will swear by it, but the only people I remember doing that have awesome/expensive rigs.

If you can't drive a stick-shift, forget it.

Buying it IMMEDIATELY makes you a pro, industry standard makes you immediately important to the industry if you buy it (PTHD at least). PTLE I wouldn't bother with personally, except for learning the system but it has so many limitations not inherent in the full blown rig.

(It's one of the easiest DAWS to learn IMO, although I still prefer Cubase and Logic and of course, LIVE !)

yeah, i figured this out. you can't even open omf files with it. not unless you buy a software that will "fix" that and it costs more then 1000 euros. i'm really not planning to spend so much money just to please people who claim that PT is industry standard. i mean, c'mon, it's 2010, right?!

You can't open .omf files in PTHD either unless you have the DigiTranslator costing $495.00

but I don't want to get into PT bashing, it is a nice system for mixing audio in (PTHD) and Knotkranky will whup my ass if I say anything else negative on here for the umpteenth time ;)
