If that were to happen, I would participate and light my "reward" on fire.
I rather be a helpful troll.

This is just the gayest idea I've ever heard. I bet the OP wants to outlaw DodgeBall too.

And this is why this would never work...people get the wrong idea and wouldn't participate, even though it's certainly not a bad thing for the people who are actually contributing.
I just don't get where people started seeing this as a form of government or "outlawing" anything. I mean yeah, there's voting, but it doesn't seem like the op is suggesting anyone gets any kind of power or extra say in anything.

Re: Rewards for people that help out on the forum
I think the forum is fine how it is. I've been here not too long and I know who's helpful and I know what usually to expect from who. When I need advice I get it from anyone and USUALLY get it even better from someone else at the same time. This place is great, and that is a good idea, but I wouldn't vote for it.

wow, everyone's so adamant about not having something that won't even affect most people who post in general, as if giving these people any credit is just an incredibly cumbersome idea that will make the forum totally suck and change everything for the worse - you all sure are encouraging others to help. Maybe by actually being encouraging of these people, you'd get even better help on a more consistent basis, but I guess we'll never know.

Because some things sound better on paper than they end up being in reality.john doe by choice wrote:wow, everyone's so adamant about not having something that won't even affect most people who post in general, as if giving these people any credit is just an incredibly cumbersome idea that will make the forum totally suck and change everything for the worse - you all sure are encouraging others to help. Say your advice isn't appreciated? or you don't like the current US president, or you're a target for peoples anger because of any number of reasons? So you don't get the points etc. Anything relating to a tier system of any kind inevitably causes a certain environment to grow, and personally I'm pretty happy that my favorite DAW's public forum is basically anarchy in the real sense. We have to self moderate for the most part, which does eventually work.
Sure cosm is helpful, but set up anybody who's also interested in selling things as gathering points etc? I don't want that. Honestly I would hide my post count if it was an option, even that is capable of being abused IMO.

I would agree with you, except that it isn't true anarchy here - we still have to adhere to the rules that Ableton presents us, and they also have to abide by German laws on top of what they expect from us manners-wise. If it were anarchy, then Cperezz would be able to post whatever whenever, no one would ever get banned, and this place would be full of child porn and god knows what else. I'm all for freedom of speech, even if I'm against what is being said, but the only way this is going to be a truly free forum is to host it on a server in Somalia and disconnect it from Ableton altogether. I know that's completely unrealistic (and naive to expect, which is why I don't expect it), but if the goal is true lawlessness, then this forum would have to be based in a lawless place, and then it would grow into another environment that wouldn't be fun at all.Machinesworking wrote:Because some things sound better on paper than they end up being in reality.john doe by choice wrote:wow, everyone's so adamant about not having something that won't even affect most people who post in general, as if giving these people any credit is just an incredibly cumbersome idea that will make the forum totally suck and change everything for the worse - you all sure are encouraging others to help. As far as the points system being abused, you have a point, and I'll concede to it, since I have no doubt that some people here would abuse such a system (it's a pretty outspoken lot here, with plenty of people who go against something for no better reason than to spark conflict out of some desire to engage in lowbrow interweb humor), but I believe that people who step out of their way to help others do deserve credit for what they do.
Anyway, whatever, it's not like I would get anywhere personally from a system like that - I don't spend enough time here to offer help before 20 other people already have, and there are tons of people here just as smart or smarter than me who will have a better method than I would advise anyway.

Well in terms of an actual political system, anarchy has never been what people paint it out to be.john doe by choice wrote: I would agree with you, except that it isn't true anarchy here - we still have to adhere to the rules that Ableton presents us, and they also have to abide by German laws on top of what they expect from us manners-wise. Read Homage To Catalonia by George Orwell for a description. (any chance to recommend that book really!) basically a working anarchy is a consensual cooperative, so rules of some sort apply.
Anyway, point systems breed hierarchies which I'm opposed to as much as can be.

It's amazing how much free gear comes your way when you act professional (ie, do-gooder) and try to help people in a courteous way. You don't need a rating system on a forum for that, nor should it be something you expect. Treat people decently and stop talking like a drunk high-schooler, it's amazing where that can lead you.
See, there you go, being helpful again. I knew I was right to poop in your sandwich.

Re: Rewards for people that help out on the forum
Any type of score that people can accumulate is a dangerous thing - including post count. People tend to form cliques of mutual supporters and soon learn how to game the system. Take a look at http://slashdot.org sometime if you don't believe it.
The only motivation I need for being helpful is that by helping someone else I am strengthening my own knowledge. And sometimes I enjoy working out tricky technical problems just for the sake of it (geek!).
The only successful example I've seen is http://stackoverflow.com/ where you get post questions and answers that people can vote up or down. But that is basically all you do there, no room for chat, and a lot of effort goes into thinking about and tweaking the system to keep it from being abused.
But nice idea in principal, It would certainly be interesting to watch. Maybe it could be restricted to the Tips and Tricks forum.
