I'm no expert on DJ controller but I know you can buy the controller with soundcard built in.

One thing that I don't like about combining things like this, is that if one breaks down then the other is broke as well.

It like the Hifi systems, you buy separate Amp,deck, Tuner and eq. That way if something breaks down, you can still use the rest. Unless its the amp in which case you only have to replace the amp.
Just my tow pence on the matter.

Good for a soundcard. Not a controller though (?)

I'm not entirely sure, but I *think* you can use an m-audio xponent with live via rewire. If it works, I would have reservations about the extent of mapping/control of live through it.

Almost! This is for WIndows only! (Forgot to mention I'm on a Mac).
I will look into the Allen & Heaths (I'm sure they are $$$$ though)

I use one on a Mac. Might be the BCD3000 instead of 2000 though. I think the only difference is it's black.

However I also think these type controllers are better for something like Traktor which I also think is better for DJing.

Yep IMO the allen & heaths are the only ones worth it. However you may have to sacrifice a testicle or your first born to get the cash.

FYI, BCD2000 has OSX driver issues. Haven't heard of problems with the BCD3000. Maybe a smaller interface like the audio2 is an option? That and a uc33e or nanokontrol are still smaller than most, and you can upgrade each independantly

Xponent works as an interface and a controller within Live without any kind of ReWire, you map stuff out just like you would any other controller, although I don't think there is an editor or anything like that. Can't remember what happened when you spun the wheels on them and tried to assign it but it might be pretty cool to mess with.
