Edit: @ Cool Character: You're right I should have just said get over it. I really just don't get the hang up about Apple, it's not that big of a deal. They did invent the personal computer, change the phone, and come up with a music delivery system model where atleast people pay for music. They're a big company with faults, they're over hyped, open source is more ideal, all those things are true. I just think there are more important things in life to get angry about. If people digging a computer company's products is driving you nuts, you might be too stressed out.

BTW one problem with companies trying to make tablet/readers is the display. A large LCD display takes up a lot of battery power, that seems like a giant hurdle.

Also, I was very obviously just teasing about Apple being the most legit thing to auto-dislike. Even if Apple and Microsoft both blow with every piece of their hardware and software; it is all unfortunately a matter of picking your poison, after all. Yesterday I grabbed myself a GPS for cheap... now I realized that I can install different software on it and now my GPS is also a a/v-mediaplayer w/ touchscreen for less than 40 Euros. That's 20 times cheaper than an iPhone or 4 times cheaper than iPod, which doesn't have a GPS function. It may not look as cool as an ipod but it does the job! I don't hate apple but in certain cases I just love non apple products because they can do so much more for less money.

Exactly. I always did hate this shit. Work hard to play hard or go the fuck home. If we're talking health care coverage then I'd hear you out. Complaining about the cost of an Macbook? I don't complain about what I can't afford. I just go to work, put in my hours, and save until I have enough to satisfy my needs and wants. KVR, Apple haters, and (i)ndependent film lovin' college students come to mind whenever I think of people who complain about not being able to afford luxuries outside of their price range.

i'm pretty sure the ibm 5100 was the first personal/portable/destop computer. it was released a year before the Apple I which wasn't actually a full system as it didn't even have a case.

continuing on... iphone wasn't the first touchscreen media playing phone. and itunes wasn't the first digital music store.

Apple has never come up with an idea first! they just rip off other ideas, maybe add some features, and mass-market the products. while this is very smart, they are not innovators.

I said in terms of the relationship between technology and culture. The effect is tangible just like search, cars, or anything else. Someone made something that changed how we experience daily life. Just like Ableton affected my relationship to music, pro tools didn't. Does that make me a "fanboy"? No. It makes me appreciative. What a ridiculous oversimplification. Why are so many people on this forum so angry? It's supposed to be a fun exchange of ideas. Angry haters jump on any opinion to satisfy what? Ego? The need to be rude to complete strangers on a daily basis? Do you speak to people in real life this way? Ask yourself that. Someone says I like soccer and you say "you're an uninformed fanboy, you suck!" Nice. That would go over real well.

i think you need to learn the difference between stating something as a matter of opinion and as a matter of fact... when you say, "They did invent the personal computer", that is not you giving your opinion. That is you telling us what you know to be fact. Which, as it turns out, was not fact. So, even though the other comments might possibly be considered your opinion, your opening statement was uninformed bullshit that you tried to pass on to everyone without doing a little bit a research and as a result, i reject your views entirely on this subject.

I'll try to be as clear as possible. I've never said on any thread that Apple is better than PC for music. Never happened, never said it. They have come out with some things that have changed my individual experience of daily life. He's a great philanthropist but in terms of technology, Bill Gates hasn't. That's just me. I still don't get the Mac/PC debate but I'm not a tech savvy computer person. It's a matter of preference, whatever works for the person is A OK by me.

What I'm thinking about is culture. I'm not interested in Apple, I'm interested in the affect that these technologies have on our culture, on my life. When esteemed writers talk about the transition of print media to the online age and they reference the iTunes model as proof that if the convenience is there people will pay for content- you've had an impact on the culture. If someone invents a device (Microsoft, Apple, and HTC w/ Google's Chrome are said to be working on it) where you click on a picture and it becomes video- it's not TV and it's not a magazine, no one programs the TV station, you control what you read and watch- if that catches on it would be big. In one of the articles linked below he talks about how people want to touch what they want to learn, people have been thumbing through pages for hundreds of years. Here are two opposing viewpoints on the importance of this potential technology.

Ok you're certainly right about that but in the popular imagination they did. They created the market for personal computers, the popular idea that a person would or could have one. That's the important change and they made it happen.
