assist me in choosing a condenser.

Post by mihai » Wed Jan 13, 2010 5:46 am

i'm looking for a good vocal condenser ~$300. currently i'm looking at:

audio-technica at4040 > http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT4040/
rode nt1-a > http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/NT1AAnniv/
blue bluebird > http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Bluebird/

i want to the mic to color the sound as little as possible since i'll manipulate everything in the daw, and i need it to sound clean. at the moment i'm opting for at4040 but advice and suggestions are quite welcome.

I had an Rode NT 1000 which is defenitly a good mic like all
the Rode stuff.
Now i own an AT4040 and i really like this as well,
even a bit more than the NT 1000!
Try some if you have the chance and pick one that fits to your needs.
But like i said rode stuff or an AT4040 is always a good choice!

for around 300 euros, the ADK Vienna

one of the best (if not the best) vox mics around (i prefer it even to neumann U87) (well, as much as a mic can be 'the best' but it's the greatest large diaphragm allrounder, i know of, hardly ever needed to use a different character mic for even extreme female or male voices)

it's totally overlooked, it's only a tiny belgium company and the price does not give you necessary the feel
that there is nothing really better on the market.

(if you run it through 'the brick' pre amp, you get a match made in heaven)

The Rode NT-1A is a great mic but shop around, you can often pick up this mic for $200 or less.

ADK - great mics. Not so common in North America unfortunately and I'm not sure you can pick up the mic you mention .

Actually I found here $229 for Vienna fixed and $349 for Vienna MK8

i've used the Rode a few times but actually found my cheaper Studio Projects C1 to sound a bit better sometimes.

and i second the SM57 recommendation.

well, a SM57 is still a standard to have in any good mic collection, for sure... and you can also use it for vox, if you need that in your face stage sound...

but i really wouldn't say it's particular a good vox mic.

The SM57 is a dynamic mic - great on snare drums and micing up guitar amps but not so much for vocals in most situations. Still, a classic mic worth having - I own one and use it quite a bit.

The C1 is a good mic, I love them as drum overheads in a stereo pair and especially for recording acoustic piano in a stereo pair, but I like the Rode better for vocals and acoustic guitar. Then again, I'm a bit of a Rode fanboy - if they wanted to endorse me, I'd be happy to accept ;) (I'd like a couple of NT-5s and an NTK please to compliment my NT-1A and 2 M3 mics).

The ADK mics are really good though, they are just rare in North America- the likes of Sweetwater, GC and the like don't carry them.

i have an sm57 but i need to record some soft vox and the 57 won't cut it. i need to get a condenser anyway for other things as well but i'm going to need to finish a release soon and have to step it up.

although i have taken a look at the adk, i might just go for the bluebird. too soon to say now though, i'll give it some thought.

If you get a chance, go to a good music store and try some out, because it's all really subjective. I am not a huge fan of Blue mics but that is just me and I am a biased Rode fanboy. YMMV.

The Studio Projects C1 and the ADK mics are good, Audix makes good mics (although their dynamics are especially good) and the AT4040 if on sale is also good (I have a 3035 I picked up for cheap in a sale and it is a good vocal mic).

+1 try to check them...

i also give rode mics a big thumbs up, but particular for vox i am a ADK fanboy... go figure... all the mics / brands leeds mentioned are very decent microphones,
but it is impossible to say THAT one is the best, mics have character all of them...

still the ADK Vienna especially plus (maybe in the future, if you want to get the best out of it) the brick preamp is really a match made in heaven and can easily compete with neumann / neve combos.
(for under 1000 euros the combo, for that you not even get a U87 naked)

bottom line, don't be confused, try to try 'em out. it's a fair bit of money you are going to invest.
