I'm kinda confused, I thought I understood until I starting hearing more, then the more I heard the less I understood.
I just want to bring classic DJ'ing into Live, I think it might be the catalyst to get me semi-seriously back into DJing and beatmaking, because cuttin' & scratchin' are the aspects of my game.

Allright, well I'm taking the plunge, I bought a VCI-300 yesterday.
I'll keep you all posted as the bridge is actually built!

It made a lot more sense to me after I watched Huston & Nick's full demonstration NAMM video:STRATEGY_510 wrote:I'm kinda confused, I thought I understood until I starting hearing more, then the more I heard the less I understood.

The Bridge isn't terribly complex, it's pretty simple. When you put a Live Set on a deck in Serato, you see grid markers in Serato's waveform view. If your files are properly warped to the grid, you can beatmatch with timecode control from there.
You can't scratch clips in Live, but, if you have the same audio of the clip you want to scratch in a WAV or MP3 file, you could throw it on a deck in Serato and scratch it. A little workaround and organization will get you there.

With little workarounds and organization you wouldn't need to use The Bridge at all.
Re: Ableton & Serato Announce...And it's FREE!
ie. just export your ableton track to an mp3?

Yes, or the sections you'd normally fire off a clip for.

I don't know if this what my esteemed colleagues above are responding to but this is something you can already do without the Bridge and in fact wouldn't use The Bridge at all. So zero value added.Hidden Driveways wrote:You can't scratch clips in Live, but, if you have the same audio of the clip you want to scratch in a WAV or MP3 file, you could throw it on a deck in Serato and scratch it. Now if you can drag a clip directly from the session deck into a normal deck and scratch it then that's a different story.

Mastah Lee
Hey, this is Lee. I’d like to clear up some points about how this patch works:
1) This patch relies on the Ms. Pinky max external. The only way to get this is to shell out the $100 for 4 pieces of Ms. Pinky vinyl and software. It is totally worth it, though, as you get free updates for life and the ability use the Ms. Pinky external as the basis for anything you create in Max / M4L.
2) I think I need to clear up what is actually going on with the clip scratching. As of right now, the Live API does NOT give you access to the playhead within a session clip. So instead, whenever you play a clip in a track, the Ms. Pinky patch looks up the path to the source audio file, and then reads that into its scratch buffer. Essentially, you could create clips with just the names of audio clips within the search path and it would do the same thing. In order for this to work, you need to add audio clips you want to scratch to be within the Max 5 search path. This is easy though, something you do once and then forget about it. Instructions on how to do this are included in the patch.
3) This all means, of course, that you cannot scratch warped material. Sorry. Ableton is apparently working on adding these things to the Live API, however, and you better believe that once this stuff is available that I’ll be adding it to this patch.
4) This isn’t as limiting as it sounds. If you want to scratch a Live instrument or a sample that is warped, just simply pipe its output to another track, record, and then scratch the recording. You really get about 90% of the desired functionality here.
Hope this clears things up. I’ll try to answer any other questions that come up. Appreciate the interest!

Why The Bridge Matters
To everyone bitching about how this doesn't reinvent the wheel:
It does.
I have been DJing for 7 years and for the first year of "big" success I was on Live (7 then 8 ) w/ all manner of controllers from Nanos to UC33e to the APC when that came out. After travelling throughout the region and getting a number of regional guest DJs, though, I began to notice a pattern: Ableton DJs get NO RESPECT and everyone uses Serato. The reason? It's easier, faster, requires no prep, is more straightforward, and is FAR more reliable. Additionally, when you play out at a real club there's almost always two Technics 1200s (or CDJ 1000s), a DJM 800, and a Serato box, so all you have to do is swap the USB cable to your laptop and *bam* you're ready to play. As for FX, all you need to do is have a decent mixer, ala a DJM (and if you want to whine about price, one of my mixers is a 400 which does just fine and is not too bad if you search on eBay.) With that said, however, my skills using MIDI controllers derived from time with Live are very useful now as I have a Launchpad on a stand MIDI mapped to all sorts of stuff in Serato.
HOWEVER,
Live is still the absolute best program out there for sculpting sound, just not for DJing; that is unquestionably Serato. The Bridge changes all of that. Any DJ who has tried to make a mix in Serato and fucked up in the 59th minute is in LOVE with the mixtape feature. Additionally, I plan on going nuts with dummy clips and so on in the Bridge with my Launchpad set to launch session clips. This means that the best, most stable program for mixing with Technics 1200s or CDJ 1000 MK3s (accept nothing less) will now add many relevant tools from the best audio sculpting program around, which is non-coincidentally designed for live performance.
In other words, FANTASTIC! Now can we get a release date?

...which is all not bad. Particularly for you, in your situation.
But it still doesn't allow you to scratch clips in Live, nor does it allow you to use Live's FX on audio coming from Serato. Which is not great.

Re: Ableton & Serato Announce...And it's FREE!
What exactly do you think a bridge between Serato and Ableton is suppose to be...duh. Serato the master of timecode vinyl emulation...Ableton clip lanching warping etc and also production...Of course serato will control the vinyl manipulation and of course ableton should be control the clip lanching and production! I had to buy live eight and it was pricey since I already owned Scratchlive and Itch. But to get something out of the bridge you need at least a SL1 which can be purchased for less than 400 dollars. Serato Scratchlive already has midi assignable controls and can be used without vinyl emulation using internal mode and and ANY midi controller you want! Neither company should be expected to just give all there respective products to the "other's" customers for free.
If you always wanted vinyl control of Ableton clips you need to learn and buy Serato... and in my case (since I want the mixtape feature, production ability, and to be able to sync a live set with my Serato set, I must purchase and learn ableton.
Also I do understand most of you DJ using ableton coz you don't want turntable/CD control of clips/mp3's so DUH the bridge is not for you...it for people that own or have interest in both products and want to use features of both in a DJ set
For all of you traktor scratch users that really just want this for traktor there is a reason ableton chose Serato. Its in the initial annoucement 2 years ago...
Also I had a chance to use it at Namm 2010 for 4 days and I am so pumped...As soon as the apc 20 is released Im getting it and I will be back to post videos
