I knew some awesome girls but none of them liked electronic music, even the ones who went to electronic night clubs. Having said this, Shoegazing was in when I was at University and Raves were just starting to happen around the time I graduated, but got less attention than Oasis vs Blur in the Britpop battles that dominated tabloid media. Only nasty crustie druggies with dreads who didn't bathe and wanted to live in a caravan and eat tofu went to raves, apparently ...

One thing I noticed was at the University I attended, more than half of the students seemed to live locally and just go home and not participate much in getting drunk at the Student Union bar, many of them lived at home and had boyfriends/girlfriends/fiances etc. Almost all the cool people I knew at Uni in London were not from London.

Things have changed a bit for the better. For example, Wendy Carlos was known as Walter Carlos when I first heard of him/her ;)

I also still think most people connected to producing and enjoying electronic music are geeks. This seems to annoy some people, but not me. So what. I'd rather be a geek than someone who buys Britney Spears and Lady Gaga records just to be popular. Listening to how some of us (self included big time) talk about music and technology gear lust past and present confirms this. I love talking about plugins and analogue filterbanks as much as some girls love talking about shopping - so what ! Better this than some dumb jock who likes country music. Nothing wrong with being a nerd :)

I see no lack, Seattle has a lot of electronic musicians who are female.
My vocalist for instance, even if all she plays is a Chaos Pad run by her voice.

Where I live there isn't any problem at all with being a female musician, you maybe even don't have to try harder if you're attractive in some way. What I mainly notice as a reason for a lower amount of female artists in general is the all pervasive self doubt you find in both sexes. People who should be painters, musicians or playwrights who don't because of insecurities etc. This tends to be worse for women it seems.
What I'm saying is that locally at least I see no lack of interest in female musicians, more like a lack of ability for female musicians to get over internalized sexism and grab the ring.

I have met awesome, intelligent girl musicians.
wow, are you kidding?

not quoting you by name, because it's not personnal, it's not you, but the quote is representative, to my eyes, of lots of posts in this thread:

TOTALLY FUCKED UP. :x

writing these kind of sentence implies a good measure of machism IMHO, like saying "yes the majority is dumb, but some of them are intelligent"...

as guys speaking to a (female) DJ friend of mine after the show, saying "wow, girl, it's great you're a DJ because you're a girl, keep on!", but during the show was telling me that he didn't like at all the music she deejayed, but it was good that this DJ was a girl... dumbass guy.

---

I don't give anything interesting to the present debate, but this kind of quotes made me react.

cheers

wow, this discussion is beyond the beyond of extreme brain retardation. I haven't seen so many uptight twiddle-pots with their adult-diapers all knotted up in one place since...hmm, the last time someone said something that was taken too seriously. you're too easily wound up.

I never even knew this song existed until very recently , it was banned from airplay pretty much everywhere at the time.

If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man
While putting her down, we pretend that she's above us

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave of the slaves
Ah, yeah...better scream about it

We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah...alright...hit it!

We insult her every day on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she's young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb

I would say that female electronic musicians have an advantage if they can put up with the shit. Yes, they might not get the respect they deserve, but the upshot of this is that the bar is lower for them so it's easier for them to break in to a scene. Then, due the the fact they stand out (for being a woman), it's easier to pick up a following and draw crowds. Good-looking girls get it extra easy in this department. I would only have to see a hot girl DJ impress me once, and I will remember her. A guy DJ would have to repeatedly prove to me that he is shit-hot to get me to remember him.

Girl electronica producers on the other hand - i've never met one, and I don't know of that many across the board. As it happens know a couple of girl DJs and none of them have really expressed any interest in production. I'd love to meet a girl who is into it...though if she was better than me that might be a bit immasculating, don't ask me why...
