TouchOSC runs on it unmodified, and presumably the TouchOSC guy can do more to take advantage of the bigger screen.
I expect in a year this thing will be pretty common as a controller.

I'm an Apple freak, and I think it will flop..... All I can see is a bigger piece of glass to break, already broke the iphone glass, and my hand fits AROUND that, this is just an accident waiting to happen..... nice try though.

It's amazing how little imagination people have, as soon as someone writes a customizable ipad app that communicates with max4Live over usb every ones gonna be drooling watching youtube vids of it. But until then all they can say it's "it's just a big ipod touch"
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Indeed sometimes when something features a glass component the glass will break. For a greater percentage of people it does not when handled properly.
I think the government should use iPhones to determine who has super human strength they weren't aware of.
Here, hold this.
And do what with it?
Just do what comes naturally.

I feel like ranting about this...
I'm stunned at how full of fail this thing is. For all intents and purposes it is just a big iPod touch. For someone like me who has an iPhone already and iTunes on their computer, I'm having a hard time imagining what new this brings to the table other than a bigger screen. It's also not cool how controlling Apple is getting with their proprietary "everything has to go through iTunes and the App Store" ways. Though it is possible companies like Ableton could develop versions of their software (or new software entirely) specifically for the App Store, why not...
Still, the bigger issue for me is how Apple missed the boat on creating something that fills in the gaps between the iPhone/iPod Touch and a full computer with iTunes; something that completes a bigger picture...something unique, which will live up to their "Think Different" moto. They did not, instead they decided to offer reduntant functionality with a bigger screen, and all the same limitations. It doesn't even have stereo speakers yet it's being touted for multimedia use. It's puzzling to me.
I know what I wanted to see, and what I hope will eventually be offered in the not-too-distant future: A tablet that runs on a real OS, with real connectivity, stylus and touchscreen driven, front-facing camera and high quality built-in mic, with kickass multi-media quality speakers for starters. I want to be able to sample something off the television with the built-in mic, throw it into live and start playing with it, controlling Live with full touchscreen/gesture support, all from my living room couch. Then whip out the stylus and start writing some lyric ideas down, etc...

I can cross the street just fine, but I do have clumsy hands from a lifetime of banging on drums, I bet I can knock your ass out with one bitchslap across the face thoughbeats me wrote:Have your loved ones recently required you to wear a helmet and safety goggles when crossing the street?BongoBennie wrote:I'm an Apple freak, and I think it will flop..... seriously though, iphone glass is $200 to repair, and as far as a controller goes, touchscreens do not make the best controllers as you have to focus much more intently on them with your eyes, I sit behind a lighting desk every night with 3 touchscreens, but in show mode, its all about the buttons and faders...
But you never know, I phone wasn't the shit till all the third party apps came out.

I hear that. But they would have put a $2000 price tag on something like that.jamester wrote:I know what I wanted to see, and what I hope will eventually be offered in the not-too-distant future: A tablet that runs on a real OS, with real connectivity, stylus and touchscreen driven, front-facing camera and high quality built-in mic, with kickass multi-media quality speakers for starters. it's totally crazy that anyone would pay $829 for this. Well I guess people with $$ to blow (send it to haiti instead. At least it won't be wasted)
the "shell" starts at $499.

These new pads (from all the manufacturers) will just be a front end for content. Its the breadth of content available and the value and ease of use that will determine if they become a must have gadget. It depends on your needs.sowhoso wrote:I hear that. Im a voracious reader, and being able to download newspapers and magazines, and being able to read them in the format intended without having to throw away several kilograms of paper a week, is a massive plus.
I have a bulky PC tablet I use constantly, being able to do the same thing with something the size and weight of a magazine is fantastic. Also, using a tablet as a graphic novel/comic book reader is just pure fun, you cant really experience it properly on a smaller screen.
Everyone has different needs, personally i think netbooks are pointless. To me they dont do anything well enough to justify a purchase, yet millions of people love them.

Re: Apple iPad. Meh.
it could do anything i do with my laptop now... exept making music.
i could imagine to have one for all the non-musical things with much more comfort.
and maybe it will be a remote for the daw or have some additional musical add ons like the iphone has now.
it will flop like the iPod and the iPhone

Re: Apple iPad. Meh.
With a little imagination it's not hard to see where this can go, a speedier processor in the pad, bigger screen estate. What I imagine will happen very soon is one of the big controller manufacturers like novation, edirol etc, sticking a ipad dock cradle on the front of a controller, and you have a ready made control surface, it's not beyond the realms of speculation by any means. Or maybe we will see a Ableton app in the appstore, it's large enough for a decent clip view I would think, maybe with a scaleable zoom on the track buttons (or something like that lol)
