I wouldn't say that Live has anything to envy per se...
However, there was a time when I was running Renoise along side Live simply because I could run multiple instances of Battery 3 without constantly worrying about a crash . Not so much lately tho .
Renoise has some really cool features. I'm still relatively new to the program, but I've found some cool ways to integrate it into my Live setup. I particularly like the pattern effects, and the way you can manipulate samples. Nothing I couldn't accomplish with Live, but composition in Renoise is just a bit different, and sometimes different is good. It's a pretty cheap program for what it does, and its quite stable. Go for it!

i love renoise.
it just keeps getting better and better with every new update
i got ableton live intro not long ago,so what i have started to do,is make all my breaks and crazy programming in renoise, then rewire it to live intro, record it into intro, and then start to re-arrange it
works really great

I really, really like Reniose but I don't devote a lot of time to learning it right now. It's great, and an awesome price, though.
I don't 'produce.' I write music.

How about just trying it out and learning about it instead of posting the same question here every few months?:Tweaking Knobs wrote:So whats up with renoise ?

Re: Renoise 2.5 ? any users in here ?
I have Renoise 2.5 - a friend of mine who is a Renoise freak bought me a license as a gift for doing some mixing and mastering work for him.
http://www.renoise.com/about/what-s-new-2-5/
It costs $59 - that's what is so good about it and it's usable on Windows, Mac and Linux - if you own all 3 platforms, you can use it on all 3 platforms for the cost of ONE license. It's light on CPU load and has some nice FX for the money. It's a tracker so if you're not used to using trackers it takes a bit to get into it's workflow, although you can enter your note data via it's inbuilt keyboard, or MIDI controllers, so you're not limited to entering text like in a traditional tracker.
For audio recording it is lacking, but for setting up samples and VST sounds and beat programming quickly it's awesome.
I haven't spent a lot of time learning it, so I typically rewire it into Live. One really great thing is that you can host VSTs in it while running it as a rewire slave, something you cannot do with Live if you rewire slave it to Cubase/Logic/PT/Sonar/Reaper etc.
The new version has pattern matrix and will have a lot of functionality for programmability with controllers and devices with an open programming language similar in concept to Max4Live.
Nice GUI too - here are some links to some screenshots I took.

renoise is deep...despite being 'only' a tracker/sampler
no bells and whistle synths...but can load vsts..
y'all check out it's 'Meta-Devices' !
I've been begging for the likes of these in live since v4...
scripting support...
and it has OSC coming!..(I think this may be a first for DAWS..no?)

Re: Renoise 2.5 ? any users in here ?
Love me some renoise, and ya, it just gets better and better. I run it concurrently with live via rewire, nothing complex, I just like to create mostly-rhythmic stuff in renoise then record that kind of stuff as clips into a live channel and treat it like any other audio loop clip. so really i don't need to run them concurrently as I tend to build stuff in one or the other but not at the same time (i HATE trying to write one song while sequencing in Two or more programs, drives me nuts...) but yeah, I make it work because it's worth it, renoise is just FUN and such a different way of building music. For more melodic stuff I never use it, changing note values in that kind of view just isn't intuitive to me (prefer piano roll) but for beats, samples, and chopping glitching etc etc it's great fun, and a very different kind of experience then you'll have anywhere else.

I have used older Renoise versions for a while because I coming from Tracker scene (Amiga Protracker) and liked this concept alot. But now I have Live. This fits the way I produce tracks much better than a tracker.
But Renoise is a very good program. If you like the tracker concept you should definitely give it a try.

True, although renoise 2.5 has advanced the software quite a bit, I am not a huge hardcore tracker fan, but like the new Renoise and things like the pattern matrix make it a lot more useful to me.
Renoise AND Reaper are the best things you can buy for 60 bucks.
