Yes it could well be a faulty drive. I sometimes get a CPU fan error when starting up and have to press F1. Got to get it sorted. It's less than a year old. Damn!
Anyhow, I am fixing it through the backdoor so to speak; opening a new file and dragging the tracks in from the browser. It's given me a chance to look over the clips and improve on them, so it was a blessing in disguise.
Thanks for all your tips and concern. I thought for a moment a months' work had gone down the drain. It's a pity Ableton is only 32 bit and only able to use 2 Gs of RAM. Maybe 9 will be 64 bit? Dare I look into the future with optimism? ;o)
