I much prefer music recorded/sequenced to click/strict rhythm.
Deviating tempos annoy me, except for in classical/orchestrated music.

with music like rock i think it sounds more realistic when not recorded to a click.
most of my favorite songs where not recorded using a metronome
i did a search for songs by bands in the rock genra that completely annoy me (like greenday and nickleback) and all of the annoying bands use a metronome for the majority of there music.

almost always...it HAS to be recorded with a click (at least for the drummer)..otherwise it falls apart..
even if recording with a click... timing will NEVER be perfect throughout the whole take...
(except for maybe 1% of very well trained and technical god musicians)

most music that i searched was not recorded with a click. the graph will show that the timing sways but when listening to these types of tracks none of them seem to "fall apart".. they just dont sound mechanical.

I get your point, however, with my band, until I joined they had never used a click etc, and tbh the playing was slightly sloppy and tempo fluctuated throughout every different section of each track. Since my involvement, Ive had the drummer playing with a click on headphones, and the whole band has become much tighter. Playing together is a lot easier and the band sounds better as a result. To this end I wholly support clicks.nathannn wrote:i like both.re.mark wrote:I much prefer music recorded/sequenced to click/strict rhythm.

Using a click doesn't make the musician any less of a performer - and in my experience has actually improved their playing!

New Order "Blue Monday" got a machine score of 100%.
I'm gutted.

I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

playing with a METRONOME (for the f'ing love of whatever god you pray to, stop calling it a click. a metronome can use any sound, be it a click, beep, or some conductor tapping on his music stand with the baton while he hears the metronome) is great training, but I think eventually you need to learn to do without.
I don't 'produce.' I write music.
