How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
There is lots of opinion and pseudo science about whether or not to use a sub woofer in your monitor system.
I keep quite a few speaker systems in the studio for checking translation, most of them include subs. My main session near fields though, are sans sub.

cheers eg!
there's nothing like the low frequency rumble of a sub to connect you to the music.
unfortunately I share a wall with a neighbor, they're totally cool about noise (two years, no complaints) but I know how obnoxious their home theater subwoofer is so I don't fire back with one of my own. want.

Re: How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
I`ve got monitors that go as low as 31 Hz (check out APS Aeon), but I`ve decided to buy an Adam-audio sub 12, which goes down to 21 Hz. Now I`ve got full control of low frequencies, I know everything what`s going on. There are no suprises when I go to club with good PA
Re: How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
I use a sub in my main monitoring, but only as an extension of the frequency range and not to get "more bass". I have 8 inch monitors and so use the sub to only give me that little extra very low bottom end - that the monitors don't cover as well. When the sub is on alone, you only hear this very low bass "whisper". This gives me tighter control on the low end and lets me know exactly what is going on in this region - which translates very well to clubs and bass heavy systems.

I have a sub but my next purchase will be Genelec 7050 b Sub for my 8030,s
Re: How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
I use Samson Resovl 2.1 for my secondary monitor system and a Yamaha sub I got with my old computer speakers. I think the Resolv sub gets down to around 30hz at 80 watts. Both are just for checing the mix. My mains are Dynaudio BM15a but no sub. They have enough low end for my size room.

I dont mix with mine constantly on but its essential for the final stages of my mix, Im making drum and bass and its easy to make ultra low subbass with it on , when you turn it off theres no bass at all in the monitors woops

Sub is more fun to make music with. The booms and the oomphs will get your groooves oon!
Re: How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
Indispensible when making dance music. How can you write a club track without one??????
However, the sub has to be used very sparingly. Too much, (even though us house hedz like it ), will lead you to making weak mixes.

Re: How do you feel about a sub in your monitor system?
Absolutely. In our specialist mindset, we can forget the fact that the famous Yamaha NS10's were consumer grade equipment. Also, the high end audiophile stuff is aiming towards similar goals as studio stuff, so it is common to see for instance, B&W speakers in places like, um, Abbey Road.funky shit wrote:Honestly dont even need one.

Thus begs the question; do we really need specialized monitors?
