I think 8 gb ram is overkill for ableton since it's still a 32 bit app.

I couldn't disagree more. You can never have too much RAM. Never.
I disagree as well. I used to think 2gb was fine, until I started to get really into sampled sounds as opposed to strictly soft synths. And even with a 32 bit app, 8gb will still benefit you if you use certain programs that can use ram outside the host, like Omnisphere, Trilian, and Kontakt.

Damn. I'm planning on buying a whole turnkey system. New MBP, new interface, and a new RAID drive in one shot. After literally years of thinking it over, I'm going with the Fireface UC. You gotta compromise somewhere. I love the RME sound. I think I could live with some less than perfect drivers for a spell.
I think it's only the firewire RME interfaces that are having problems on Snow Leopard right now. I think the UC's are fine.

I've got Trilian and Kontakt 4... and have been eyeing Omnisphere. My old 2.33 MBP C2D with 3 gb RAM did not likey.

Yes, I do have Omnisphere, Trilian and Kontakt 4. And while I used to not care about ram so much, I do now enjoy some rather large ram hungry instruments, like the Trilian basses, and some big multi-sampled kontakt instruments, so I am now using a fair bit of ram with those. And for Live sets where you want to load multiple songs, ram becomes an issue, because although you can turn devices off, you can't unload the ram.

I ordered the same config but with 8GB RAM. It's currently on a plane from Shanghai for delivery to me tomorrow! The kids will probably hijack it before I get to use it though. :D

Loving mine. It sounds dumb, but I'm on a computer constantly these days, and getting a new one that's noticably faster is great.
