As many of you know by now, you can use any class-compliant USB audio interfaces with the iPad using the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Let's make a list of devices confirmed to work with the iPad for audio in/out.

Confirmed:
Griffin iMic usb audio interface
beta 58a + mxl USB to XLR adaptor
Blue microphones like Snowflake, Snowball, Yeti..etc.
Samson COU1 USB mic
Logitech headset mic
Behringer UCA-222/202

Untested USB class-compliant interfaces:
PreSonus AudioBox
Edirol UA-25
Cakewalk SPS-25
Zoom H2

Confirmed:
M-Audio USB Mobile Pre
"Will work powered off the iPad USB bus, unless you turn on phantom power. To use phantom, you have to power it with a powered USB hub. Works fine with our AudioTools app, also MultiTrack (as a stereo input device), and StudioTrack by Sonoma (as a mono input device sourced from the left preamp channel). Output works fine in stereo."

Possibly incompatible according to one report (could be due to what kind of app it was tested with):
M-Audio FastTrack series

"In general, to have any chance of working the device must be "OS X class compliant" and 16-bit."

More detailed info coming from Audio Damage:
http://www.analogindustries.com/blog/en ... 3333372821
"first, the interface has to be class-compliant. That means that it needs to work in an OS X computer without a driver install. Second, it has to be USB1.0-compatible. No USB2.0-only interfaces. And finally, it has to either use less than 200ma of power or be externally powered."

"A safe rule of thumb is that if it has mic pres (especially if it's able to provide phantom power) it's going to need a wall wart or something."

"any App that uses CoreAudio for its playback, and does a good job of using it, automatically shunts its inputs (if it has 'em) and outputs to the USB device."

"One exception to this rule is Korg's iElectribe. As I said, CoreAudio in Cocoa Touch is incredibly complicated and poorly documented, and even big companies mess it up. iElectribe is an example of that. iElectribe _must_ use CoreAudio; it wouldn't work any other way. However, when a USB audio device is plugged in, iElectribe crashes on start-up."

He also says that he already has iPhone OS4 on his iPhone and that OS4 works better with all this than OS3.1.

Zoom H4n works great for me as an interface via the camera connection kit. Just make sure it's powered up before connecting, otherwise it will attempt to draw power from the iPad in excess of the iPad's limts, and you'll get an error message and won't be able to connect.

"Well, I got the Apple Camera Connection Kit today, and what do you know? My Apogee USB Mini-Me works with the iPad.

I'm running the Mini-Me on battery power, so everything is portable. Audio dithered down to 16/44.1 sounds great."

From StudioSixDigital:

"iMic - works very well - if you use an external battery powered pre (I have tested it with the MP-1 - Sound Devices and a measurement microphone - I have an earthworks M23 - you have a very high quality completely battery-powered solution.) No dropouts or sampling errors, operates at 48k, able to duplex and deconvolve recorded files into impulses using impulse response (sampling errors or dropouts would cause this to fail or yield spurious, distorted results) - see below.

ART DualPRE USB Pre - works off of iPad's power, including phantom power but I get random sample dropouts and glitches making it less than useful for impulse response measurment and recording.

Apogee One - confirmed not working with or without USB hub.

Apogee MiniMe - works with external power (obviously) and a USB hub. I am contemplating building up a 12v battery to run the MiniMe and USB hub which will again make the system battery powered. The MiniMe has the advantage of higher quality convertors over the iMic as well as less 'stuff' to connect - i.e. ipad connection kit to iMic to MP-1 to microphone. Also for general recording the stereo input and compressors of the minime are quite nice sounding."

Behringer UMA25S plugged into iPad via Camera Connection Kit:
"Powered from batteries the iPad recognises and uses the MIDI input from the keyboard perfectly but doesn't enable audio from the UMA25S (says it uses too much power). Powered from PSU the iPad recognises and uses BOTH the MIDI and audio in/out."

If the Zoom H4n works, does anybody know if a H1 would work? That would be a nice little interface for ipad.

Hi guys,

I run the website http://iosmidi.com where we are maintaining a list of devices that are compatible with the iPad. That list quoted earlier is from our site (http://iosmidi.com/devices).

I'll add those listed here to it. We also have a free app that can be used to test our hardware so check that out at well :D
