Drum pad control (Maschine vs MPD vs SL pads)

Post by billpayer » Tue May 11, 2010 5:28 pm

Hello guys,

So I've bought a Launchpad and I have been using it for what I thought I'd use it for (launching clips and generally helping my workflow) but I have also had quite a lot of surprising fun getting back into playing beats in via the pads. I have done this a little bit on the drum pads on my SL but I haven't really enjoyed that experience and obviously the lack of velocity means that any serious work on the Launchpad is ruled out.
So I have decided that I would like some new pads and originally looking at Maschine but I am not sure that I can justify the £500! I have seen some of the MPD32's on ebay going for pretty cheap, less than £100 so I have been very tempted by this but I have found that the reviews are definitely not anywhere near as favourable as the seemingly general consensus that Maschine makes a lot of peoples life complete!
I don't think that I would go back to sampling, but I suppose you never know and I originally thought that I would just use a controller to control drum racks.
Anybody got any opinions on this one?

Cheers,

Andy.

The best drum pads are Maschine and PadKontrol.

MPD32 aren't bad either. If you want to save on cash, get PadKontrol or MPD32. If you want faders and knobs on it, get MPD32, if not get PadKontrol.

If you want the best drum and sampling software + hardware combo, get Maschine. But you'd just use it for Live Racks and midi control I don't think it would be worth it. Might as well just get one of the other two.

I like my MPD18.

But, to be honest, I still prefer to drawn drums out by hand most of the time.
Some stuff, and some other stuff. Honest.

MPC/MPD pads don't even come close to the responsiveness and sensitivity of Maschine/padKontrol pads. And they're very limited in versatility compared to other pad controllers in that they're only good for percussive and one shot triggering. If you were to try playing melodies with sustained notes/chords with MPC/MPD pads, it would take a lot of effort to have the notes not get cut out even when you don't want them to. You don't have this problem at all with padKontrol or Maschine's pads. I've had many of them and this is how I rate the sensitivity/responsiveness of the pads:
Maschine > padKontrol > Triggerfinger > MPC/MPD
