May already have been mentioned (couldn't be bothered wading through all the Mac/PC stuff), but Automat by Alphakanal is excellent. You could also do worse than giving Crystal by Greenoak a try. Those two alone should keep you going for a while.

There are also plenty of free Mac AU and VST FX plugins out there. Check out the excellent DestroyFX set, which still work a treat, even though they've been around for years. There's also the MDA FX suite, which are quite useful (though a lot of them replicate Live's own FX). Other members of the 'SMEX' network have produced Mac versions of their plugins too, notably Bram (Bouncing Ball Delay, SupaTrigga), mdsp (LiveCut, Fire, AnalogDelay etc.). There's also Magnus' Ambience reverb, and last but not least, Koen's KTGranulator is quite cool for glitchy noises.

maybe you should spread the word to the 97% of computer owners that don't have Macs!

don't be fucking ridiculous!!! Live works the same in a PC as it does in a Mac as does all other software that is dual platform. and my PC hasn't crashed as a fault of windows 7... ever!!! there goes your statement out the window.

what's with you bitter mac fans? had a bad experience with windows 98 and you thought that windows would never be what it is now? so you made the switch and after thousands of dollars wasted, you can't back down from the bullshit river of denial that Justin Long has been spitting for the past few years. the only things Apple has going for it are Logic and Final Cut and maybe the Euphonix controllers. and that is it!!!

To return to the actual topic of the thread, you could also try Michael Norris' Spectral AU plugins, which are pretty cool for creating ambient soundscapes out of almost anything. Again, they're not synths as such, but can produce pretty cool SFX and washes of sound.

I've found them a little unstable in Snow Leopard, I have to say, so maybe not the best thing to use in front of a crowd.

Go for this, has a nice search where you can select what type of synth/effect you want, what format it should have, what OS it should run on, whether it should be free or commercial...
